Sometimes we find inspiration from the oddest places. We recently received a call from a client letting us know they'd been visited by their state regulator. It was a pretty harmless visit, a random "drive by" to check on dealer tags, but it was unannounced. Yep, two agents just showed up at the dealership one morning.

Fortunately, this client works with us regularly and we'd trained their staff on what to do if a regulator (or news media, for that matter) shows up. We'd discussed who was in charge if the owner wasn't present, how asking to see ID and calling to verify it is fair game, and other suggestions about what questions to answer and what not to answer.

This is one of those small details that's a good idea to cover with your team ahead of time. A molehill can turn into a mountain if there's no planning and things are just left to chance. Take a few minutes to go over a few scenarios and who is accountable for doing what. The same thing applies if a media member or even a sheriff or process server shows up.

We know this Tip of the Week isn't flashy, but it is important, so take it to heart.
