WE RISE & WIN TOGETHER

The Power of Legislative Action

“Good policy is grounded in sound evidence and the experiences of real people.”

~Kirsten Gillibrand

Policy drives many aspects of our lives. From local policies to national policies, decisions by our elected legislative representatives help shape where we live, what we consume and how we access important essentials such as health care. For example, a local city policy promoting trees can lead to a completely different landscape, lowering the temperature, improving air quality and increasing the aesthetics of the city. It can then further help improve health by encouraging physical activity outdoors, decreasing exacerbation of pulmonary conditions such as asthma, and decreasing incidence of heat strokes. A city policy implementing excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, which have been shown to contribute to chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and stroke, can deter consumption of such deleterious beverages. A state policy on Medicaid eligibility or reimbursements could either limit or expand access to healthcare. National policies are even more far reaching, affecting over 337 million lives that call the United State of America home.

Given the effect these policies have on our lives, it is important to be cognizant of the policies that are being proposed and passed by our legislators. Although the ugly world of partisan politics has unfortunately mired our view of elected officials and what goes on in our state capitols and Washington, D.C., we need to elevate our views and minds above the partisan differences and political chaos to consider policies backed by scientific evidence or sound logic. We need to look past our differences to unite behind policies that would improve our wellbeing. As our nation faces the upcoming election, we need to understand the areas that need improvement, promote evidence-based policy solutions that address these issues, and elevate our voices to encourage our elected officials to implement the policy solutions to improve the wellbeing of everyone in our country.

Podcast: Manliness, Cat Ladies, Fertility Panic and the 2024 Election

By Ezra Klein

The 2016 election was more about immigration, about who counted as an American. The 2020 election was more about Donald Trump, about what kind of country America was and would become.

And the 2024 election is more about gender. Normally, when people say an election is about gender and family, they’re saying it’s about women, men in politics, men in power. But that is not what I’m saying is happening in the 2024 election. It’s visions of masculinity that are unstable and contested in this race.

Policies Encourage an Interdisciplinary Approach to Well-being

I was in Copenhagen, at the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, for a meeting about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and developing measures for well-being. As I listened, I realized that many of us in the United States who were working toward improved well-being were not considering what others around the globe were learning as they incorporated well-being into policy and practice. Policies grounded in well-being also draw our attention to interconnection between people and the larger natural world.

Policy Pulse

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about six out of ten adults in the United States live with at least one chronic disease, and many of these chronic diseases can be prevented or treated through lifestyle changes, including healthy food and nutrition. As such, there has been a growing interest in the “food as medicine” concept, which uses food and nutrition as a way to prevent and treat chronic, non-communicable diseases.

As one of the leaders in health policy, the California State Legislature passed Medi-Cal: medically supportive food and nutrition interventions (AB 1975) on August 29, 2024, aiming to make medically supportive food and nutrition interventions, which refer to a variety of interventions that provide nutrient rich food to prevent, treat, or reverse diet-sensitive health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, a covered benefit under Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid Program. To read the policy brief by the Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) Institute for Health Policy and Leadership providing an overview of AB 1975 and medically supportive food and nutrition incentive programs in California, please click here.
