THANK YOU!

We extend a special thank you to our outgoing board members for their support and board work throughout the years. Their time, knowledge and skills have been invaluable to WEAA. We offer them our best wishes as they move forward in living their best lives.

Helen Gagel has served on the board since 1980. Over these years she has served the board as president, vice president, treasurer, scholar mentor chairperson, and on the Educational Aid, Finance, By-laws, and Governance Committees. She was also one of the lead persons in the 2019 strategic planning process. Helen was also a WEAA scholar in the 60s. This fall she is retiring from the board after 42 years to continue to live her best life.

Joyce Gordon (center of the photo) joined the board in 2003. She was a WEAA scholar in the 60s. Joyce has served the board for many years as the recording secretary, scholar mentor, served on the By-laws Committee, and was the chairperson for the Social Committee. Joyce retired from the board in the spring of 2022 to spend time with family and to complete her novel, which will be released in the coming months.

Linda Ford joined the board in 2018. She has served on the Educational Aid Committee and recently on the Governance Committee. Linda resigned from the board in June of 2022 to spend more time with her family and to enjoy extended travels with her husband.

Sobeida Peralta joined the board in 2017; two years after she graduated from NU as a WEAA scholar in 2015. She has served on the Social Committee, now the Scholar Engagement Committee. Since graduating, Sobeida has married, completed her law degree, and had her first child. Sobeida resigned from the board in early 2022 to spend more time with her family and to focus on her career.

Arline Kaufman joined the board in 2018 and has served on the Educational Aid Committee. Arline has decided to resign from  the active board to join the WEAA Associate Board as of September 2022. The Associate Board is a better fit for her at this time in her life. We wish her well and much happiness as she moves forward.

The WEAA August and September new board member campaign has been successful. We are pleased to announce that six alumnae applied for board membership. All candidates were invited to the October 2, 2022 dinner and will be voted on at the October board meeting. We look forward to introducing you to our new members on our website and in the 2023 1st quarter newsletter.

ALUMNAE NEWS

Leslie Wiley, Class of '79

Leslie Wiley reached out to us after reading our third quarter newsletter. It was such a pleasure to hear from her. Leslie graduated in 1979 with a BS in Industrial Engineering. She received her MBA from Wharton in 1984. After many years of pursuing her career goals, Leslie received a Master's of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary. Today, she lives in Washington DC where she is an independent consultant and is the associate pastor at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. Leslie's story is another example of how WEAA scholars are impacting the world in positive ways and creating a better place for all of us.

The lesson Leslie shares is, "...you never know where life will lead you. Thank you for inviting me to share my story."

Thank you, Leslie, for reaching out to us. It is always exciting to hear from our alumnae.
