This annual report provides a high-level look at reliability issues throughout the Western Interconnection over the recent past and near future. This year’s report examines the challenges facing the Western Interconnection and how we use our independent, interconnection-wide perspective and collaborates with partners to address those challenges.

Join us for the next session of the Reliability in the West Discussion Series, where we’ll explore the Bulk Power System’s dynamic risk landscape and showcase our approach to risk management. Learn about our process for identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and mitigating risk within the Western Interconnection. The discussion will introduce our Risk Register, Dashboard, and overall Risk Management Program and prepare participants for a deeper engagement and collective prioritization at our Risk Management Virtual Town Hall on July 8, 2026.

Reliability Fundamentals

June 23–25, Salt Lake City, Utah


Join us for our three-day Reliability Fundamentals Workshop. This workshop is designed especially for registered entity staff who play a role in compliance, risk management, or reliability for your organization. By bringing together the core components of the compliance program into a single, structured experience, the workshop establishes clear expectations, reinforces risk management obligations, and delivers relevant guidance for registered entity teams.


In-person space is limited, and priority will be given to newly registered entities.

Grid Fundamentals

August 18–19


We will be hosting Grid Fundamentals in Salt Lake City. This in-person training will provide an overview of the electric power system. Participants will explore how the grid works and the principles behind its operation and regulation. Each day will deliver insight into the technology, operations, and markets underlying a modern, reliable power grid. The course also addresses reliability risks and challenges facing today's electric grid.

WECC-0157: PRC-006-5 Automatic Underfrequency Load Shedding, Update to the WECC Regional Variance – Posting for Comment 2 – Implementation Plan

On May 1, the WECC-0157 drafting team voted to post the project’s implementation plan for a 30-day comment period open through June 4, 6 p.m. MDT. The drafting team will meet on June 5 to review and address comments received.

ERO Happenings

New SGAS on New IBR Related Standards Effective in 2026 and 2027

NERC will host small group advisory sessions (SGAS) for registered entities to discuss the inverter-based resources (IBR) related Standards Requirements, from PRC-028-1, PRC-029-1, PRC-030-1, and MOD-026-2, with mandatory compliance dates in 2026 and 2027.

 

The event will consist of two parts:

 

  • General session live webinar: August 10, 2–3 p.m. EDT
  • SGAS one-on-one sessions: August 11–14

 

Send registration requests and questions for the general session to Charlie Cook by June 30. NERC will accept SGAS one-on-one registrations on a first-come, first-served basis.

NERC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment

NERC released the 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment (SRA), which found that, while record resource additions have strengthened readiness for the summer season, elevated risks remain in some areas.
