New Reliability in the West Discussion Series: IBR Entity Registration Recording

WECC hosted its Reliability in the West Discussion Series webinar on April 1. The discussion included an update on inverter-based resources (IBR) status and the reliability impacts associated with new Category 2 GO and GOP registrations in the Western Interconnection. Additionally, the webinar covered new and updated NERC Reliability Standards, and a review of past IBR events, including:

  • the Iberian Peninsula event
  • the Blue Cut Fire
  • Odessa events in Texas

Panelists shared lessons learned from these events.

The conversation highlighted the importance of data quality and consistency, as well as the introduction of the new electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling.

Electrifying Trivia Answer

Answer A

Due to the high amount of Beaufort cheese being made in the region near Albertville, France, there is a lot of leftover whey. In 2015, the city’s electricity company opened a biogas power plant that takes the leftover whey and ferments it into methane gas. This gas is used to fuel an engine that generates about 2.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year!
