THE APOSTLE PAUL – LESSON 27

SECOND MISSIONARY JOURNEY – PART 13

AT CORINTH WITH AQUILA AND PRISCILLA

After fleeing from Athens, Paul remained in Achaia (Greece), and then went westward of the Greek city of Corinth (Acts 18). There he found a fellow tentmaker and Jew named Aquila. Paul stayed in the house of Aquila and his wife Priscilla.

Aquila was originally from northern Asia Minor where Paul had been forbidden by Holy Spirit to preach. Aquila had gone a while to Italy, and was now in Corinth, Greece. It is thought that he may have been a convert of Peter. Most of the Apostles had gone preaching abroad on their mission’s trips. Peter even addresses the “strangers” (gentiles) in I Peter 1:1 which included believers in Pontus. Or he may have been one of the proselytes in Jerusalem at Passover when the Holy Spirit baptized the 120 in the upper room. People were present from Pontus (Acts 2:9). Regardless of the time or manner of his conversion, this husband and wife team were to become part of Paul’s traveling missionary team for a season.

Paul found a synagogue in Corinth and began “reasoning” with the Jews there on every Sabbath. When Silas and Timothy finally arrived there from Macedonia, Paul got bolder, pressed by the Holy spirit to boldly declare that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ, the Anointed Messiah. When the Jews from that synagogue came in opposition and blasphemed the name of Jesus, Paul washed his hands of them and declared that he would preach his message to the gentile population of Corinth.

Paul and his party departed the synagogue. Paul now took up a new residence in the house of a believer named Justus. Ironically, the house of Justus was right next to the synagogue. In fact, it was so close that it practically joined walls with the synagogue. This could easily have agitated the opposing Jews; however, God gave Paul assurance of safety here in a night vision (Acts 18:9-10) that no harm would come to him in Corinth. He was to continue in boldness to preach Jesus. God assured him of many believers in Corinth. In fact, the chief ruler of the synagogue at the beginning, Crispus, became a Christ follower.

Paul and his party remained in Corinth a year and a half preaching and establishing a strong church.

THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PART 3

Now that we have learned about receiving the “second blessing” that Jesus wants every believer to have let’s talk a little more about speaking in tongues and also the gift of tongues.

At the initial receiving of the baptism of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost all the believers in the upper room spoke in “tongues” which were languages they had never learned. This continued to be the sign to the early church that someone had been baptized in the Holy Spirit. It came upon both Jews and gentiles.

In I Corinthians 12 it lists the gifts that God has given to the body of Christ. One of them is tongues along with the interpretation of tongues. This is a gift for public worship, not private worship. Many times, people that speak in tongues speak out in church, but they do not have the interpretation of this tongue. They work together. Paul said in I Corinthians 14: 5-6, “I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth (speaks in their own language a prophetic word from God) than he that speaketh with tongues, EXCEPT HE INTERPRET, that the church maya receive edifying.”

This is different than speaking in tongues in your own private worship. When it is spoken publicly with interpretation it benefits the entire church that hears the message. Not everyone is given this gift, but everyone that has been baptized with the Holy Spirit and has spoken in tongues can speak in tongues for their own private benefit. In Jude verse 20-21 it says, “But ye, beloved, building yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost (tongues) keep yourselves in the love of God…” So, you see, your faith is built up when you pray in tongues privately, and you keep yourselves in the love of God while praying in tongues also.

Many have mistaken these two separate functions of speaking or praying in tongues. It has brought much confusion to the body of Christ. It has brought much disorder in church services also. We must not confuse the office of tongues and interpretation which is a ministry gift with the private speaking in tongues for our own personal benefit.

Speaking in tongues should not be forbidden, as long as it is in order. The gift of tongues and interpretation is needed today just as much as faith, wisdom, healings miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, word of knowledge.

Remember, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the doorway to all of these gifts. You will never have the fullness of the gifts from God without first being baptized in the Holy Spirit.

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Don’t ever allow a bad thing that’s happened to you to take you out of the game of life... And never let a setback prohibit you from making a comeback. Remember failures are not final...Unless you quit. No, you’re not finished when you’re defeated...But you are finished when you quit. Look around you and you’ll see that the game is not over for you. So get yourself up and shake off the pain of that failure; And the fear of the thoughts and the opinions of others. You must stop being so defensive and quickly get back on the offensive. Just know that you were not meant to be on the sidelines; But you were meant to be a guideline in the headlines! So pull out your boxing gloves and hop on back into the ring of life. Then you can do what you were created and called to do...Fight the good fight of faith.
