THE FALLEN HEROES OF FAITH – LESSON 11

APOSTLE JOHN

Apostle John, “The Beloved” of Jesus and brother of the Apostle James was technically not a martyr. I include him in this series for what he endured as the only one of the twelve who lived a long life and died a natural death at a very old age.

John did the work of a true apostle by planting new churches throughout Asia Minor (mostly in present-day Turkey).  These churches were Smyrna, Pergamos, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, and Thyatira, all of which are addressed in chapters two and three of Revelation, excluding Ephesus from the seven churches therein addressed. However, John did have a very close personal connection to Ephesus.

John was in Ephesus when it was ordered that he be sent to Rome, presumably by Roman Emperor Caesar Domitian who ruled from A.D. 81 to A.D. 96. It was there where his persecutors cast John into a cauldron of boiling oil. God miraculously delivered him from the boiling oil without harm to him. It was the same God who delivered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace. Surely John’s faith and intimacy with Jesus in “the secret place of the Most High” brought forth that miraculous deliverance.

Having seen that miracle, Domitian ceased from trying to kill him. Instead, he banished John to the prison island of Patmos. That is where God’s favor continued as John was taken in a vision to heaven in the Holy Spirit. He was given there all that is written in the Book of Revelation. It included the messages to the seven churches which still apply to us today. It also gave the history of God’s plan for earth all the way to the end of this earth and heaven, and the birth of a new earth and new heaven. This was written about A.d. 96 which was the year of Domitian’s death.

The successor of Domitian, Nerva, recalled John from Patmos a short time later. John was then allowed to live out his last days at Ephesus where he died a natural death among his cherished brothers and sisters in Christ.

Jesus said of the world in John 15:20, “…if they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.” How will you respond if persecutions come upon you as it did for these servants of Jesus? May God give us the grace and strength to endure it. That is the true meaning of Philippians 4:13 that says, “I can do (endure) all things (situations) through Christ which (or who) strengthens me.” Verses 11-12 set that in context. Therefore, let us be reminded of Ephesians 6:10 where it says let us “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might (strength.”

HAVING AN APPETITE FOR GOD

Do you enjoy food? I could ask you, what is your favorite food and most of you would have an answer. I could ask, what do you have an appetite for, and most would have an answer. I love to watch people shop. Some just take what they need off the shelf and put it into the cart. Others spend a great deal of time sorting and picking the best of the best of what they “have an appetite for.” They are in the stores much longer than others.

Do you enjoy music? I could ask you, what is your favorite type of music, and most would have an immediate answer. I could ask you, what is your favorite song, and most would have an answer. Some people spend hours listening to music and their favorite type of music and favorite artist. Others can take it or leave it.

I could ask you what your favorite sport is, and many would come up with an answer immediately. They are passionate about their favorite team. They wouldn’t miss a game even if it interfered with Church or Bible study. Others might say they have no interest in sports at all.

Do you have favorite clothing, hair styles, or jewelry? Do you spend a lot of time “getting ready” each day with makeup, and getting ready? Some would say it is of little interest, while others are consumed with their “trinkets” and other stuff. Some wouldn’t leave home without their makeup properly applied, while others even forget to take a bath. Everyone does their own thing.

I could ask you do you have an appetite for God? Do you hunger for time with him? Do you search the scriptures and study to learn new things daily like those who shop for hours in a grocery store? Some do it mechanically, while others do it with passion.

Do you have a passion for knowing God so well that you feel his breath on your face when you spend time with him? I am sure I would get many answers if I were to ask this question. Some would think I was judging them, while others would get so excited because of their passion for God and His plan for their lives. They can’t wait to talk to others about Him and what He is showing him.

Show me your appetite and I will know your passion. I pray that if it isn’t for the things of God that you will make a decision to make that your goal. We can’t live without him, so passionately seek after Him and let him show you the way, the truth, and the life that He wants to give you. I guarantee that it will be better than any music or food that you could possibly desire. As the scripture in Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

The Trail to Trouble.jpg

Teaching children to listen and obey is often a difficult task. This short story is about Jason who learned the hard way about not listening when he went down a trail to trouble.

Christian principles are taught about praying and obedience.

PROPHETIC WARNING

Be prepared for religious spirits to rise up and come against those that bring the true word of God. As with Jesus they will plot to destroy the true messengers of God’s word for this hour. They will attempt to assassinate you in the spirit realm and the physical realm. Some will be of your own household. Be vigilant and be prepared for much separation as the coming of the Lord draws nearer. There will be painful separations as those that carry the spirit of Judas that have been allowed into your inner circle will be among those that will try to destroy you. Fear not as you go forward in the anointing for such a time as this!

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Just remember that God can use all of those BITTER experiences you’ve had with others to make you a BETTER person; IF you’ll only determine to let Him help you to take a BIT of the BITE out of the BITTER experiences in those connections. When you do that you can be assured that it will make you a better and a happier person. So keep in mind that any form of bitterness is a heavy load to carry; And it weighs much more than any of us needs to have on them.
