LITTLE IS MUCH WITH GOD
In John chapter 6 we see a multitude of people following Jesus up the mountainside to listen to him and receive a miracle. They had been there for quite some time and had seen many miracles.
Jesus was sitting with his disciples and saw that the people were hungry. In verse 5 he said, “…Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?”
Jesus, being God in the flesh, knew how he would feed the people, but it was a test to see what the disciples would do. There had been miracles of feeding the people miraculously before this, but this was a different occasion. Would they remember the provision that had come miraculously before when he fed 7,00 people?
Philip answered Jesus in verse 7, “Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.” Now, two hundred pennyworth was about 200 days’ wages. That was a lot of money then and even more now. The situation looked hopeless to Philip when he saw the multitude.
Perhaps you are in a situation like that also. There just isn’t food, clothing, money, medicine, or whatever to meet your needs. Whatever the case, your faith is being put to the test.
Back to John 6. Then, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother said in verse 9, “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”
He had a little faith, but not enough faith to do the impossible. The disciples had forgotten what Jesus had done before. That was then, and this was now. There were five thousand hungry people nearly fainting for lack of food having been with Jesus for a long time. But one little lad had brought his lunch with him. Five small pieces of bread and two “small” fish. How could that be of any use?
Then Jesus told the disciples to sit down on the ground. He took the boy’s lunch and blessed it. The miracle started with blessing or thanking the Father for what he “did” have. It was a small lunch, but God multiplied it because of Jesus’ faith. Not only did it feed everyone, but there were twelve full baskets left over. The little became much. It went above and beyond what was needed.
Some say the baskets full were enough for each disciple, but I believe that was also a test to see what the disciples would do with the “abundance.” I believe each of them gave that boy those twelve baskets of food, which was an overflowing amount. Because that boy gave all that he had, God blessed him abundantly. He was rewarded for his giving.
You see, little became much because the boy was willing to give his all. Never doubt for a moment that when you give God everything you have that he will not bless you back. Do not hold back the little you have. Give it to God and watch him multiply it.
