THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION – LESSON 2

THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT

The English settlers aboard the Mayflower had a charter as a trading company granted by King James I to colonize in northern Virginia, a territory of England. English stockholders financed the expedition with an understanding they would be paid profits from the new settlement.

Bad weather forced the ship farther north into Massachusetts, thus voiding their charter and leaving them with no governing authority over them. Only 41 of the 102 passengers were true pilgrims making the journey for religious reasons. These were namely to escape persecution rendered by the church of England and the government. The other 61 passengers were merchants, craftsmen, indentured servants, plain common folk, and orphaned children.

The 41 pilgrims were a branch of Puritans called “separatists.” They completely separated themselves from the Church of England because they believed it would remain too much like the Catholic church.

They called the other 61 passengers “strangers.” As they anchored off the coast, some of the “strangers” began to rebel against the pilgrim leadership. It was close to anarchy. The pilgrim leaders set out to create a temporary set of laws for ruling themselves according to a majority agreement. We call the resulting document “The Mayflower Compact” although it was not so called at that time.

In fact, these 41 Puritan Separatists were not even called “Pilgrims” until that label was given them by a society in Plymouth in 1800. The Mayflower carried 50 men, 19 women, and 33 children and “young adults.” The governing document, or compact, was signed by 41 of the men on November 11, 1620. Then they sent out scouting parties to determine where on shore would be a suitable place to set up for their eventual December 11 landing. On November 21 they elected John Carver as their Governor. He became the first democratically elected leader in the New World. He had been a leader throughout the voyage.

Tomorrow we will look at their first year in Plymouth and their hardships. We will speak of that fall feast attended by the survivors, who were thankful to God for an abundant provision despite the hardships.

THE ARMOUR OF GOD PART 6

THE SHIELD OF FAITH

We continue our study of the Armour of God with Ephesians 6:16 where it says, “Above all, taking the shield of faith wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”

Do you notice that it says the shield of faith quenches ALL the fiery darts of the wicked? All means all, but it takes faith for this to happen. What is faith? I believe a simple definition of faith is “just believing God meant what he said.” If God says it then it should be settled.

Every promise in the word of God is received by faith. Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” This tells us how important faith is. We can’t please God without faith.

So, how do we get this faith and make it effective in our daily lives? It can’t be bought, because it is a free gift according to Ephesians 2:8. It is developed through hearing, my friends. Hearing what? Hearing the word of God. The more of the word of God, which is Jesus speaking to us, the more faith is developed.

I believe the opposite of faith is fear. If you don’t have faith you will walk in fear and the fiery darts of the wicked one will penetrate into your soul. Fear brings torment. So, we do not want fear in our lives. Fear leaves when faith comes in.

In Hebrews 12:2 it says, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” He is the source of our faith, and he is the one that increases our faith through hearing his word. As we read the Word of God, our faith is developed and becomes stronger. This is how the fiery darts are repelled. Remember it says, “above all” so faith is the most important part of the armor of God. We win all battles by faith, not by our own physical strength. Faith will get you through when you have no strength.

When the Apostle Paul prayed to have a thorn in the flesh removed God told him that His grace was sufficient for him. Paul was able then to have the faith to trust God even though there were many adversaries against him.

How about you? What is your faith temperature? I pray it is hot and that the fiery darts melt when they touch your shield of faith. If not, then spend more time reading the promises of God and build your faith up.

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Watch out now and don’t you dare crumble there in that my crisis; But instead just learn to make better choices and better moves in the right direction. In the meantime, know and understand that God is now making His loving move towards you. So keep your eyes on the all knowing and the all seeing God and watch Him as He leads you ever so gently yet very intently toward your destiny. Yes, He recognizes your capabilities; But He also realizes that those same capabilities are now being hindered by your current crisis. You don’t ever want to forget that you and your God together are so much bigger than that crisis. So get up, get going and make all your moves in the right direction...For the tides are now turning in your favor; And that very crisis is turning into an opportunity just for you.
