WEEK 1: 2020 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
State

GRAIN LIEN LEGISLATION INTRODUCED : HSB 500
  •  ISSUE
  • MidWestOne Bank clawed back 5 years of storage, drying and quality discounts from a local elevator, disrupting the industry standard and creating additional uncertainty for rural Iowa
  • STANDARD PRACTICE
  • For 100+ years, an elevator’s storage & drying costs have been deducted when a check is written to the farmer to pay for his/her grain
  • Elevators preserve/enhance the quality of farmer & lender collateral
  • IMPACT
  • Farmers and Local Communities
  • Uncertainty pushes commodity prices lower in an already fragile system, impacting farm families and communities
  • Less transparency in the system = added confusion and frustration for local farmers
  • Grain Elevators & Ag Industry
  • Disrupts an effective system for 324 grain dealers (46 cooperatives) and 1.4 billion bushels of stored grain: average at risk is $5 million/year/elevator
  • SUPPORTERS
  • Agribusiness Association, Co-Bank, Iowa Credit Union League and IDALS

Please, reach out to your legislators and connect each with how a lack of legislation would negatively impact you, our communities and our local farmers. Let Katie know if you have any questions or concerns.
