Earthquake Relief Fund

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announces the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Earthquake Relief Fund, a fundraising effort by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the recent earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

FROM A NEIGHBOR RESPONDING TO OUR EARTHQUAKE APPEAL:

Thank you so much for including us in this mailing. Even though we are not members of your church (and are not Greek Orthodox), we genuinely admire your church's leadership in creating this fund to assist with earthquake relief. It is a major step towards world understanding and world peace and breaking through cultural barriers. We have accordingly made a donation through the website you included in the hopes of being part of this positivity.”

BUDGET

Our annual expenses are approximately $135,000.

Stewardship donations in 2022 were approximately $50,000.

Fr Jim and your Parish Council, in order to lead by example,

are contributing $1,000 or more per year.

Please consider your giving level:

$1000 is $19.23 per week

$750 is $14.42 per week

$500 is $9.61 per week

$400 is $7.69 per week

Are you giving back to God as you have been blessed?

The average pledge at our church for 2022 was over $700

When was the last time you increased your giving to your church?

Could you give $20 each week?

It is important to give our treasure as well as our time and talent.

Is a Member of our St George Family in the Hospital or Extended Care?

Please contact Fr Jim with the name and location of any members of our Saint George family that may be in the hospital, Rehab or Nursing Home. Please indicate whether the need is urgent. Call Fr Jim's office 646-519-6760 or email [email protected]. Leave a clear message and a contact number in case additional information is needed.

No tray will be passed on Sunday.

Please place your offering directly in the slot on top of the candle stand

or in the basket as you leave the church

OR give by text to 833-396-0633.

Please remember the church in your will or estate plan.

We have set up a LIGHT-A-CANDLE option on our online giving page. You may choose a candle type and submit names for prayers. Click HERE to go to our Online Giving Page.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR TODAY

The Epistle Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4

Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand.

The Gospel Reading is from Matthew 6:14-21

The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Great Lent is a time for self-examination and self-denial – a time for taking control of our lives and our bodies. The purpose of the fast is to give us a greater awareness of our dependence on God. It is a time to improve ourselves and our relationship with God.

Lent is a time for greater works of mercy and charity for those less fortunate than us. It is a time for visitation of the sick and assistance to the poor, and generally a more joyful relationship with those who are close to us – our family and friends.

Most of all, Lent is a time of joy and a new beginning. We cleanse ourselves –mind, body and soul– through the physical and spiritual fast, keeping a Christian attitude in all that we do. All this is done to prepare us for the Great Feast of Pascha – the Resurrection of Christ.

NOTE: As we look ahead to the beautiful midnight Resurrection Service on Holy Saturday night, we encourage you to plan to stay through the Resurrection Liturgy which should end by 1:20, after which we will gather in the church hall to break the fast, breaking our red Easter Eggs in the traditional fashion, and sharing together in the joy of the Resurrection.
