Net Neutrality Nixed

FACEBOOK LIVE EVENT
Thursday, December 7
11:00 A.M. Spokane time

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is expected to strike down net neutrality, the system of rules that tries to create an even playing field on the internet for websites and users.

NAR supports net neutrality and opposes the FCC plan to end it in mid-December.

NAR analyst Melanie Wyne explains and answers questions on how net neutrality works and what the real estate industry can expect to happen should it be terminated.

Impacts are expected to be felt by MLSes, listing sites, associations, brokerages, sales associates, and consumers as internet service providers (ISPs) create fast and slow lanes on the Internet and enter into agreements with some content providers.

Legal Hotline: Who Gets the Earnest Money

Washington REALTORS® Legal Hotline lawyer Annie Fitzsimmons answers a frequently asked question: "Who's entitled to the Earnest Money?"

Typically, this arises as a Buyer's claim for the Earnest Money under the Financing Contingency, but that decision is hinged on the details of their Lender Letter being in compliance.

See Annie's answer in this new Legal Hotline video:

The Voice for Real Estate

The House passed tax reform, and NAR now looks to the Senate bill. NAR opposes both bills because they neutralize the incentive for homeownership.

The House also passed long-term reauthorization and reform of flood insurance, which NAR supports.

Other segments in the video look at team legal issues, the latest home sales numbers, and a new safety web product for real estate professionals.

Call for Action!

SAR RESPONSE RATE:
26%

The House of Representatives, this week, passed H.R. 1, the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act" - a bill the National Association of REALTORS® calls an all-out assault on homeownership.

NAR President Elizabeth Mendenhall issued the following statement:

It's disappointing to see this legislation move forward, but the real work to shape this debate is just getting started. Realtors® will now look to the Senate as we make our case that the tax reform proposals pending before Congress overwhelmingly remove the tax incentive to purchase and own a home in America.

This is about much more than a cap on the mortgage interest deduction. Rather, it is about whether homeowners will have the rug pulled out from under them with a tax system that suddenly favors renting over owning in a big way.

Make no mistake, middle-class homeowners will see their home values fall if this proposal moves forward, while large corporations walk away with the bulk of the tax cuts.

American homeowners shouldn't have to pay for corporate tax cuts with their home equity. It's a matter of basic fairness; 1.3 million Realtors® have known since the beginning, and America's 75 million homeowners are just beginning to learn, that homeowners will be the ones paying the tab. Realtors® will do our part to spread the word as we work with the Senate to address this impending assault on homeownership.

The National Association of REALTORS® will keep the Call for Action going until the Senate acts on the Tax Reform legislation.

NAR opposition to the Senate proposal remains unchanged.

The Call for Action has been updated to ask United States Senators to oppose the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, there will not be a "new" Call for Action.

The Call for Action letter is pre-written - all you have to do is enter your information and send it in.
