District Update

As we approach the end of 2025, we want to thank our community for the continued trust and support you show the West Chicago Fire Protection District. At this time of year, our firefighters place a strong emphasis on safety-centered training that prepares them for the most challenging situations. That includes Rapid Intervention Team training — a dedicated “firefighter rescue team” that stands by at major incidents — along with firefighter survival and Mayday procedures. In simple terms, these drills ensure that if a firefighter ever becomes lost, trapped, or injured, we can quickly send in extra help to locate them and bring them safely home.

We are also continuing to plan for the future of emergency medical and fire response in our District. We have moved forward with the purchase of a new Horton ambulance through Foster Coach, our regional ambulance dealer. Due to current manufacturing timelines, delivery is expected in approximately two to three years. Once it arrives, it will be placed into frontline service to support our EMS operations. At the same time, we have initiated the early specification process for a new fire engine, ensuring it reflects the operational needs of our crews and the community. Throughout all of this work, our members remain active and visible at City of West Chicago events, because staying connected to the people we serve is just as important as the training and equipment we rely on every day.

Special Safety Message

December kicks off our annual

Keep the Wreath Red

campaign to remind our community to decorate safely during the holidays. Each West Chicago fire station will display wreaths decorated with red lights. The wreaths will remain lit throughout the month of December. If a decoration-related fire occurs during this time, a red light will be replaced with a white bulb to notify our community of the fire.

Safe decoration practices include using light strands free of frayed or pinched wires, using only heavy-duty extension cords that are not daisy chained, and keeping real trees watered and fresh.  Watch the video below to see how quickly a fire spreads with an un-watered Christmas tree.

If you are using candles in your home, please take extra precautions to prevent accidental fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), candles account for 4% of home fires nationwide annually and are the second leading cause of bedroom fires. Candles must be attended at times, clear of combustible materials, and in secured holders. Consider using flameless candles. For more info, click - Holiday Safety Tips

Winter is here, and everyone is trying to stay cozy indoors.  Did you know home fires occur more in the winter than in other seasons? Many of the fires occur due to issues with heating equipment and improper cooking practices.  It is essential to make sure that you and your family have an evacuation plan if a fire breaks out.  Home evacuation plans work together with operating detectors. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors must be constantly working.

Injury Prevention Reminder

Cold weather brings ice, snow, and freezing temperatures, and injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia can develop quickly without proper precautions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the “Avoid–Spot–Treat” approach to prevent cold-related injuries. Key tips include dressing in layers, recognizing the signs of frostbite and hypothermia, and seeking prompt treatment if symptoms occur. More details can be found on the CDC website at Frostbite Safety

Winter Weather Alerts

Are you ready for the extremes of winter weather? Take some time now to prepare for a winter weather event. Winter weather preparedness includes making sure that we stay on top of weather alerts and check to make sure that our emergency kit is ready, our home and vehicles are winterized, and that we plan ahead for loss of power due to a winter storm.

Quick Fact

Through an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the DuPage Airport Authority, the West Chicago Fire Protection District provides Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) Services at the DuPage Airport. Fire Station 8, located on airport property, is staffed 24/7 by West Chicago personnel who operate Crash Rescue fire apparatus. The resources are responsible for protecting the aircraft operating on the airfield, as well as the buildings (i.e., flight center, hangars, etc.) on the airport grounds. During an aircraft emergency, St. 8, along with additional fire and EMS resources, responds to provide aid.
