We welcome Rev. Elaine Schoepf as our Interim Pastor
Sunday, July 16 ~ "Come Join Us Here, Where Everything is Free!"
After my experience of extravagant welcome last Sunday at RUCC, I wanted to continue with the theme of welcome in God’s Kindom and explore the expansiveness of that Kindom and our call to burst all boundaries with the joy of the covenant we share with the Holy.

Reflection of the week from the Racial Justice Team
UCC delegates, meeting this week in Indianapolis, overwhelmingly passed a resolution titled, “Calling On United Church Of Christ Local Churches To Witness ‘A White Supremacy Free Zone’ and Confronting White Supremacy.” Through this resolution, Synod — which speaks to and not for local UCC congregations — called on all the denomination’s settings, including “local churches of predominantly European descent” to “confront the idolatry of white supremacy, in witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
“Being white does not possess any inherent superiority,” the resolution states, “other than the superiority that is bestowed upon the concept by force, violence, laws, myths, institutions and ethos.”
In introducing the motion, Jeannie Hobson from the Northern California Nevada Conference and chair of the committee which considered the action, acknowledged that “dismantling white supremacy will take a while. But the journey needs to start now.”

I’m absolutely WOWED!!
The word “Thanks!” is nowhere near enough to express my wonder and gratitude and the welcome I have received!
Not just for the marvelous service on Sunday, or even the delightful reception!
Or the lovely goodies in the office, or welcome by the Munch and Muse gang, any one thing would have been such a blessing.
But today I moved my first load of personal things into the Guest House at Craig Wesson’s place - and it is beautifully floored and newly plumbed, and it is clear how very much effort was put into it! And it is frosted on top by lovely pink candles, bathroom goodies and flowers!
I have a wee bit more to move in tomorrow- just kidding - you saw the U-Haul - I do admit I have never been one for traveling light!
I am filled with gratitude for the thoughtfulness and hospitality that seems to define RUCC - what a wondrous spiritual gift for a congregation to have and to share with the world!
I am looking forward to beginning my time sharing ministry with you, my friends.
With joy and thankfulness,
💜E

You're Invited! Screening and discussion of Aftershock
Did you know that the USA has the highest maternal mortality rate among all developed countries worldwide, and that the death rate for Black women is twice that of White women? Aftershock is a true story of two families' firsthand experiences with the Black maternal mortality crisis and how their community came together to honor and fight for two women who died shortly after giving birth. For charts using CDC data that illustrate the mortality rates by country, and by race in the US, click here.
The screening date is Wednesday, July 26, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The San Bernardino address will be provided upon RSVP.
After the screening of the film, join Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties for a guided discussion focusing on the racial disparities in healthcare access that have devastating impacts on the maternal health of women of color, especially Black women.
Click here to make your reservation.
If the July 26 date does not work from you, check popular streaming sources such as Hulu for this Sundance Award-winning Documentary.

A great way to spend a Friday evening!
RUCC has been asked to guest usher on July 28 at the Friday night show of Hello Dolly at the Redlands Bowl. The duties are easy, and consist mostly of passing the red bowls for the free will offering at intermission.--definitely something that church folk know how to do! This is the Bowl's 100th anniversary year, so the season is very special. Hello Dolly should be a real standout! Contact Paul Hodson for details!

Nominations now being accepted for the Settled Pastor Search Committee
Our bylaws have instructions for calling a settled pastor, which start with the formation of a pastoral search committee. That committee is designated as having nine members, proposed by the church board, and formally elected by the congregation.
The board would like to involve the whole congregation in this process, similar to the way we did in 2014. If you feel that someone would make a good member of the committee, please nominate them for the board to consider. Here are some of the key things we'll be looking for in the committee:
Adequate time to commit: The committee will be able to dedicate the time needed to do the job right. When we called Jill in 2015 the committee had over 60 applicants to consider. In some ways the search process has gotten easier as most candidates will have online videos of prior services for the committee to watch, but it's still going to require a significant investment of time to consider all the candidates and come to consensus on which ones to interview and propose.
Diverse perspectives: The committee will be well-rounded, reflecting all the members and interests of the church.
Deep knowledge of RUCC and Redlands: The committee will have a solid understanding of how the church works, and how we interface with our neighbors in town.
Confidentiality: The committee will keep their discussions and process private. Many of the candidates will be serving another church currently and will expect confidentiality. The committee members also need to be able to speak candidly in their meetings without worrying about what they have to say getting back to a candidate or others outside the committee.
To nominate someone, please speak with them first to confirm their willingness to be nominated, then use this form to provide your suggestion to the board by July 31. The board will assemble a proposed committee in August, for a congregational vote at a special meeting on September 10.
Finally, a note about this role and Pastor Elaine, who starts with us on July 16 in a Designated Term Interim assignment, for a one-year period. Unlike an Intentional Interim assignment, the Designated Term designation allows Elaine to be a candidate for the settled pastor role if she wishes.

Caring for Kin continues with Women of Faith
Thanks for your support of Youth Hope throughout the month of June!
In July, we will be collecting school supplies for Women of Faith, a local organization that assists refugee and immigrant families in resettling. In particular, Women of Faith need college-ruled notebooks and loose-leaf paper, watercolor markers, pink erasers, highlighters, and small pencil sharpeners.
In addition, Women of Faith are always collecting new and gently used household supplies. While we won't have room on our Caring for Kin cart for such items, if you have things from the attached list that you'd like to donate, please contact Jean Arnott at jeanarnott@gmail.com to learn how you can donate household supplies.
