Grace Fessel Earns Scholarship
|
|
By Ms. Butzer
Recently, Grace Fessel applied for South Central College’s (SCC) Presidential Scholarship, which pays for all tuition. On April 7, Fessel was interviewed by the college, and she found out soon after that she was awarded the scholarship. I had a conversation with Grace.
Ms. Butzer: Tell us about how you learned about the scholarship.
Grace Fessel: The scholarship was listed on the college website. I started looking into scholarships months ago.
Ms. B: Describe the application process.
GF: The scholarship application was due on March 5, 2021. The application was completed online. The questions were very similar to the questions on a job application.
Ms. B: How did they let you know that you were a finalist? What was that like?
GF: I received an email from the Executive Director. At first, I was excited, but then as time went on, I started to get anxious. I chose the first available time slot for the interview.
Ms. B: Describe the interview. What types of questions did you have to answer? How many people interviewed you, and how did you feel before, during, and after?
GF: I was interviewed by the President and Executive Director at SCC. They were welcoming. I felt very comfortable speaking with them and answering their questions. They began the interview by asking me to tell them about myself. We talked about my work experiences and school accomplishments. They asked me why I chose to study Family Services and my five-year goal. They asked me what I would do if I won the scholarship. They told me the expectations and standards if I were to be awarded the scholarship. At the end of the interview, they offered me the scholarship. I was excited and relieved. I felt honored.
Ms. B: Tell me about your career plans and how you chose SCC.
GF: I want to become a social services assistant. I chose SCC because I was able to begin Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) courses through them as a junior. I prefer taking online courses because it works well with my work schedule.
Ms. B: Describe what happened when you got word that you had won.
GF: I felt immediate relief and told President Parker and Executive Director Gail Kaderlik that I was so happy. My sister was the first person I told.
Ms. B: What words of advice would you give to students about looking for and applying for scholarships?
GF: Look into the scholarships available through the college. Pay attention to the deadlines. Be thorough with your answers. Having work and volunteer experience is important.
Ms. B: Congratulations, Grace! All of us at WEM are proud of you and your achievement.

2020-21 Basketball Wrap-Up
|
|
By Rylee Pelant, WEM Junior
This last basketball season was a tough one for the boys and the girls. The boys got the number seven seed for playoffs. In their first game, they played the number ten seed, Madelia. They pulled out a win, upsetting Madelia 65-54.
They moved on to play Mankato Loyola, the number two seed. I am pretty sure the whole school had doubts about this game, so Riley Schmitz, Ahmad Alladin, Ethan Bartelt, and Gabe Rux all said that they would cut or shave their hair if they won. The boys upset Mankato Loyola 60-57 in overtime, moving them on in the playoffs.
In the next game, they played the number six seed, Mt. Lake, and they pulled off a win of 46-37, which meant they were going to play in the subsection game against the number one seed, St. Clair. The boys fought with all they had and they lost in double overtime, 75-64. Congratulations, boys on an amazing season, nothing to feel down about, and to the seniors Kolin, Corey, Ethan, and Jarrett. We will all miss you next year.
The girls got the number one seed for playoffs. We got a bye for the first game, and we would play the winner of the Madelia and United South Central (USC) game. USC won, meaning we would play them for the quarterfinals. We beat USC 63-19. The next game we played was the number five seed, Springfield. We beat Springfield 54-38. We moved on to the sub-section championship against the number two seed Martin County West (MCW). We completely blew them away with a score of 61-26.
Moving on to the section championship, all of us were very nervous since Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s beat us in the normal season, but we knew we could win since we won against them the year before, to go to state. We were both ranked as the number one seed. Going into this game we all had so many emotions knowing this game could go either way. We played our best and came out with a loss of 64-59.
I will never forget this team and just how many memories I had with them and to the 11 seniors, Brielle, Toryn, Lindsay, Ellie, Allison, Autumn, Kylie, Sadie, Ella, Lilly, and Mya. Thank you for all of the amazing memories. We will miss you guys tremendously.
