Wencon set out to investigate the carbon footprint by using their epoxy products to refurbish and protect an "end-of-life" Rudderstock, compared to replacing it with a new rudder stock. And the results are significant savings on both carbon emissions, time and costs. |

So far, the gaze has been set on the smoking ship funnels, and the so-called direct emissions from vessels. But just below the waterline there is an un-tapped potential for CO2 reductions.
Research* shows, that there is an enormous savings potential, in in-direct emissions.

In comparison to business-as-usual
To assess the CO2 footprint of a Wencon solution, a specific part is selected at the end of its life cycle. A life cycle assessment tool (LCA) was chosen in order to compare a refurbishment where the part is put back in its first life cycle, to a business-as-usual scenario where the part after a linear process is replaced with a new one. The LCA was carried out by ReFlow Maritime, specializing in maritime sustainability, and completed according to
ISO 14040 standards.

The case
A rudder stock, made of 9 tons of forged steel, suffering from bimetallic corrosion in the area (s) between liners / sealing boxes and under the steering gear. The corrosion was discovered during dry docking and further assessed by 3rd party, Conclusion: the rudder stock would not be able to maintain its structural integrity until the next scheduled dry dock, Two choices: repair/refurbishment or replacement.

Scenario 1: Business as usual
is based on a business-as-usual scenario, e.g. should they decide to replace the rudder stock.
Therefore, the assessment is based on the entire life cycle of the product including resource extraction, production of raw materials, production or manufacturing of the product, 10 years in service, and end of life processs such as recycling.

Scenario 2: Refurbishment
Is based on refurbishment and life extension.
Rebuilding of the pitted surface using Wencon Cream, followed by Wencon Coating to provide a protective layer that prevents bimetallic corrosion from recurring for up to 10 years.

REFLOW performed an ISO 14040 certified calculation of exactly how much CO2 emissions could be saved by remanufacturing and extending the life of a rudder stock compared to replacing it with a new rudder stock. The result was 87% Co2 equivalent savings. Similar savings can be achieved by almost any repair or life extension of any part, which is why Wencon has decided to join Reflow's digital platform to make these CO2 savings more easily accessible across the platform. |
