Village of Whitefish Bay Official Weekly Newsletter

Message from the Village President, Kevin Buckley

Monday's Public Works meeting has a few interesting items of note:

  • Discussion regarding installation of solar panels on Cahill's warming house.
  • Recommendation for a new electronic recycling pickup box in the village.

The meeting is at 4:45pm at Village Hall.

Also, the WFB Library book sale is this Saturday & Sunday. See below for details.

Happy Halloween! -kb

Why Is The Village Hall Phone Ringing?

Can I dispose of pumpkins, hay bales, and corn stalks in my yard waste/leaf piles?

Yes, you can place pumpkins, hay bales, and corn stalks directly in your leaf/yard waste piles for collection.

However, if you live on one of the Village’s busier streets (Silver Spring, Marlborough, Santa Monica, Henry Clay, or Hampton), we ask that you please keep these items – along with any sticks or branches – in a separate pile on your parkway for collection. The Village uses a vacuum truck for leaf collection on busy streets, and larger items tend to get stuck, clogging the machine. Thank you for your cooperation!

When is the next brush chipper collection?

Brush will be collected this week (beginning Oct.30). Brush should be placed in the parkway, between the curb and the sidewalk.

Update from the Department of Public Works:

Fall Leaf Collection:

Village Requests Residents NOT Use Leaf Collection / Yard Waste Bags: The Whitefish Bay Public Works Department crews have been collecting leaves and yard waste placed in the roadway curb area by Village residents. The Village requests that residents do not put leaves and yard waste in leaf collection bags.

Residents can place leaves and small yard waste debris directly in the roadway near the curb. Please place leaves away from storm inlets as leaf decay can clog storm sewers and add unwanted material to Lake Michigan. Branches can still be left in the parkway area for brush chipper collection at this time.

Yard waste collected by Public Works is temporarily stored at a DNR-approved joint use municipal site in Glendale until it is hauled away, recycled, and turned into organic compost.

Thank you for your cooperation and helping our Public Works Department maintain efficiency during the leaf collection season!

Update from the Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust:

Did you know that the leaves falling from trees during autumn can pollute our freshwater resources? When leaves pile up on streets, sidewalks, and driveways, they can be washed away by rainwater into storm drains. The leaves can clog storm drains, making it harder for rainwater to flow away safely which can cause local flooding. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg. When the leaves and other organic debris are left in the drain, they leach nutrients into local lakes and streams that encourage the growth of certain algae and bacteria that are harmful to people, plants, and wildlife.

We can manage leaf waste better by mulching the leaves, or raking them into neat piles by the street curb (away from storm drains) for the Village’s DPW crews to collect. Remember, every small effort counts when it comes to protecting our environment. By managing leaf waste properly, we can prevent stormwater pollution, reduce flooding, and keep our water clean for everyone to enjoy. To learn more visit www.respectourwaters.org/leaf-management.

Whitefish Bay TALKS: Frank Lloyd Wright's Wisconsin With Author Kristine Hansen

Tuesday, November 14, 6:30 p.m.

Please Register- https://www.wfblibrary.org/our_events/?eid=1523

America’s most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was born in 1867 in the rolling hills of Richland Center, Wisconsin, to a family of Unitarians. Even with world-class commissions like New York City’s Guggenheim Museum, his organic architecture remains rooted in Wisconsin’s landscape, from affordable-housing prototypes in Milwaukee to his summer home and architecture school in rural Spring Green. This comprehensive guide to Wright’s designs (and those of his protégés) that are open to the public—as well as insider historical information about sites now demolished, and those available for “drive-bys” only—is for the architecture or history fan looking for tours, overnight stays or creative inspiration.

About the Presenter: Kristine Hansen

Based in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood, Kristine Hansen is a nationally recognized design and travel author with articles published on Travel + Leisure’s and Architectural Digest’s websites, as well as in Time, Midwest Living, and Milwaukee Magazine. She is also the author of Wisconsin Cheese Cookbook: Creamy, Cheesy, Sweet, and Savory Recipes from the State’s Best Creameries.

On Wednesday November 1, please consider bringing new or gently used, warm, winter items to the sandwich drop off at Schoolhouse Park. Details for both the coat drive and sandwich drive can be found here!
