Update from Public Works: | |
Public Works Week
From street, sidewalk, and public park maintenance, to the sewer and water systems, and solid waste and recycling collection, the Public Works services provided in our community are an integral part of our citizens’ everyday lives. This week, we are honoring the many hardworking Public Works employees who help maintain these necessary facilities, programs, and services.
The Village Board approved Resolution No. 3145, proclaiming Sunday, May 21–Saturday, May 27 as “Public Works Week” in the Village of Whitefish Bay. We call upon all community members and civic organizations to acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing our Public Works services and to recognize the contributions which Whitefish Bay Public Works employees make every day to our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.
If you see a Public Works employee around the Village this week and beyond, be sure to pass along a smile, a “thank you,” or a wave!

We are more than halfway through May and the vegetation is really beginning to take off! For those participating in No Mow May, please remember that even though the exception to grass height limits during the month of May is suspended, it shall not be construed to also provide an exception to the need for a property owner to abate all weeds defined as noxious weeds in Wis. Stats.
Garlic Mustard (shown in this picture) is an invasive plant that chokes out native plants from growing. This year the Garlic Mustard seems to be especially abundant. Just one Garlic Mustard plant is capable of producing 500 seeds that can survive up to 7 years! The upside? Garlic Mustard is very easy to pull!

Join Bay Bridge and other members of the Milwaukee host committee in welcoming Richard Rothstein (Color of Law) and Leah Rothstein for the release of their new book, Just Action.
Racial segregation characterizes every metropolitan area in the U.S. and bears responsibility for our most serious social and economic problems. We’ve taken no serious steps to desegregate neighborhoods, however, because we are hobbled by a national myth that residential segregation is de facto—the result of private discrimination or personal choices that do not violate constitutional rights. The Color of Law demonstrates, however, that residential segregation was created by racially explicit and unconstitutional government policy. Just Action describes how we can begin to address this, providing dozens of strategies local groups can pursue to redress segregation in their own communities. By starting with achievable local victories, we can build a national movement that can remedy our unconstitutional racial landscape.
