WFXY TOWER VANDALIZED
According to the Associated Press, a Kentucky man is accused of crashing his truck into a radio tower and silencing the local station before fleeing the scene.
News outlets report Joshua Lee was arrested Monday night on charges including criminal mischief, failure to report a traffic accident and failure to maintain insurance. Bell County police say a piece of the truck was left near the scene and led them to Lee, who admitted to the crash.
The Middlesboro radio station, WFXY, says their AM and FM feeds are off the air, but it is streaming coverage on its website. Station owner Frank Smith says the station went off air Sunday afternoon, and it could stay off air for the next three months as the uninsured tower is repaired. The KBA extends support and well wishes to WFXY for a speedy return to the airwaves.

Dennis Lyle, Broadcasters Foundation of America Board member and President of the Illinois Broadcasters Association, made a special presentation and request for support of the BFOA at KBA’s Board of Directors meeting last week. Following the presentation, I am pleased to report that the Board voted unanimously to make a $10,000 contribution to the BFOA in 2019. For those of you who may not know, the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation of America is to improve the quality of life and maintain the personal dignity of men and women in the radio and television broadcast profession who find themselves in acute financial need due to a critical illness, accident, advanced age or other serious misfortune. The Foundation currently assists two for Kentucky broadcasters at a cost of over $25,000 per year. To say that the BFOA does great work is a gross understatement. Not only does the Foundation need the financial support from the Association, they also ask for your help on a station level spreading the word about their purpose and available services. Their online media kit has ready-to-use banner ads and public service announcements for both radio and television. Please consider adding these to your website and PSA rotation.
