Greetings!
Two recent articles hit close to home creating a focal point that describes perfectly what is happening in manufacturing today: One relating to the inability to find skilled workers and the other showing what is actually happening to deal with that skill shortage and the realities of marketing in the US's "Instant gratification market".
It is really quite simple when you think about it:
Unable to find skills? .........................Use what you have better and smarter
Instant delivery on short notice?......Arm your best people with the best tools & training
It is the "better tools and training" part that is fueling the transition from labor intensive
manufacture to a more capital intensive model. The tools (automation & processes) are more sophisticated and more flexible, but require higher training and understanding to run both the equipment and the processes. This moves away from competing with low labor countries while globally remaining competitive on quality and innovation. More importantly, it puts your competition at the disadvantage of addressing demand/delivery
immediacy from thousands of miles away.
So, take the quality people that you have, arm them with better tools (equipment and processes) and you have a winning combination.
