NEWS FROM MOOR HALL STUDIO

In my last newsletter I spoke about 'drawing' and how being on the right course, with the right tutor can do you a power of good and build one's confidence and belief in one's self. Here is what some of the students had to say about Amanda Clayton's recent 'drawing' course at Moor Hall Studio.

"Mandy’s is one course I wouldn’t miss. I always come away more confident & more enthused with a head buzzing with ways to move forward."

"What a wonderful 3 days. You are so welcoming to all your students and your studio and the outdoor space are great places to work. My pre-booked lunches were scrumptious. Mandy is an inspirational teacher. She takes her time to show us the new techniques and then gives us time to play but seems to know when we need a helping hand. I have returned home wanting to continue what I have learnt but also wanting to return to Moor Hall for another course.
THANK YOU."

"The studio and outdoor areas are a really great base for a concentrated few days on art & craft processes and you made us so welcome and easy in your lovely place."

"Mandy's' approach is ideal: she encourages, explains, demonstrates and always has a gentle nudge to offer, as and when needed. The exercises were a treat too, for those of us of a slightly nervous (artistic) disposition and I loved the initial round table discussion on what we can embrace by the term 'drawing'. Also, her use of tools & diverse resources - often long held amongst family and friends - is a real joy, knowing that different hands are making fresh use (and inspiration) out of loved objects. I hope we get chance to visit again".

This amazing course was something unusual for me: completely out of my previous experiences, and very therapeutic, since I had been suffering from depression and anxiety. I returned home ‘bubbling’, restored, renewed, passionate about Art, eager to try new ideas and processes with confidence and a new interest!
Thank you so much, Bobby and Mandy

Mandy showed students, the very many ways that one could draw: with graphite, embossing, using wire, pencils of different grades, using wire, rubbings from wire structures etc, etc. This was delivered in her own particular style, with constant reference to the 'drawing and design elements' that make up a drawing. A fabulous course.

FURTHER ON DOWN IN THIS NEWSLETTER WE WILL BE ASKING YOU WHAT KIND OF COURSE YOU MIGHT LIKE TO SEE DELIVERED BY BOTH MANDY AND MYSELF, EITHER INDIVIDUALLY OR TOGETHER.

Meanwhile here are the results from her workshop

A face to face course
I still have places on this course. So do give some thought and book on-line if interested.
Day 1 ~ DRAWING
You will be working from a series of sketchbook images, drawings, photographs etc and explore a number of exercises and processes that will allow you to generate and develop visual information from an apparently simple starting point. By the end of the day you should have a series of images that will form the starting point for the work on day 2

Day 2 ~ RESPONSE AND INTERPRETATION
Days 2 and 3 consider development and interpretation. The images that were created on day one now become a starting point or template for the development of further images that distill and evolve the original imagery, moving it away from the original starting point in an attempt to create new and unexpected visual material.
The interpretation of these images into textile materials is the final stage of the project, though you may decide at this stage that paper is enough. Whether you decide to continue with paper or move into textile materials the emphasis is always on how you might sensitively interpret anything you have done on paper.
This is definitely a course to keep you thinking and making and as John Cage said:
“Nothing is a mistake. There is no win and no fail. There is only make.”

ON-LINE COURSES
These two courses above are now underway and will be running for several sessions each this month into next month.

BUT Julia's course is still to come and does have places on it.
JULIA TRISTON
'Between the Lines'
An introductory session on Monday 19th September at 5.00pm. Two full days 26th/27th September 10.00 to 4.00

During this busy two-day you will investigate ‘Line’ through a series of design and stitch exercises, and develop ways of working with papers, paints, fabrics and threads to explore this essential element. Experiment with ink, collage paper and cloth backgrounds, and then embellish these with linear marks in print, hand embroidery and/or machine stitch.
The emphasis will be placed on making lots of small samples to fill a sketchbook which can be used as an aide memoire for future work, but there will also be scope to make a larger composition if preferred.

STILL 3 PLACES TO FILL

NEW IDEAS FOR A COURSE
Amanda Clayton and myself have been talking about future courses and feel that we need to ask you directly what it is that you may be interested in doing. So perhaps you would not mind answering a few basic questions.

  1. Would you be interested in a beginners course which just showed techniques and processes.
  2. What specific content would you prefer to see.
  3. Do you want to make a finished item or just try lots of new ideas.
  4. How often would you be prepared to come to the studio.

Any course delivered would respond to the individual students needs and such courses in turn would help you discover a bit more about yourself. With a student centred approach you will gain confidence and begin to generate your own ideas around personal themes.
