SPOTLIGHT EVENT — NOVEMBER 16 — GOACC NIGHT at the SBU WOMENs game.  The St. Bonaventure Women’s Basketball team will take on Canisius, 7 PM at the Reilly Center.  Starting at 6:00 on game day, the first 50 fans who bring a canned food item to donate at the will call entrance located closest to the soccer field will receive a free ticket courtesy of the GOACC. NOVEMBER 17 – HOLIDAY ORNAMENT DISPLAY WORKSHOP, Home Depot, Olean, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Join the workshop and learn to use a saw, nailer, drill and other carpenter’s tools to cut and craft a large decorative display made of wood flats and your favorite ornaments. NOVEMBER 17 — FREE Exhibit Opening Reception, Photography by Ann Parker, Olean Public Library, Olean, 6 to 8 p.m. In this collection of “Snow and Ice: Hidden Textures,” the viewer will see the textures, colors, whiteness, and surprising detail of snow vistas, ice crystals, and snow shadows. Refreshments provided by Friends of the Library. Exhibit runs through December 29. This show is one of a series of library exhibits administered by the Olean Public Library and the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.

NOVEMBER 18 – TURKEY LAUNCH MISSION, Dresser-Rand Challenger Learning Center
182 East Union Street, Suite 2, Allegany, 6 to 8 p.m.  Turkeys may not be able to fly, but you can fly through space when you join us for a family-friendly Mission simulation. The astronauts on the mission will use smarts, wits, and teamwork to successfully navigate through space challenges and the possible turkey! After the successful mission, we will celebrate with some refreshments. All are welcome…from 10 years old to 100 years young. It will be a fun time for parents and kids!  The cost is $30 per person or $50 for two from the same household.  Mission is limited to 30.

NOVEMBER 18 — MOVIE NIGHT (Parent Night Out), Olean YMCA, 6 to 9 p.m.  All children must be picked up by 9 PM.  Youth: Bring a blanket, pillow or beanbag and join us for Domino’s pizza, cupcakes, activities and a movie. Parents: Enjoy a night out on the town while your kids are having fun at the Y.  The member cost is $10 per child with public cost $20 per child.  The cost covers Y staffing and food.  Due to staffing and food orders, you MUST pre-register by Wednesday, November 16, at the front desk or call 716-373-2400. No registrations will be accepted after close of business on November 16.

NOVEMBER 18 — LIGHT UP THE NIGHT DINNER CRUISE and SHOPPING TOUR, Pittsburgh, PA.  Empire Coachlines will provide deluxe round trip transportation, and you will enjoy shopping at Ikea, a 3-hour dinner cruise, and DJ and dancing.  See a beautiful fireworks display and all the holiday lights of the city. NOVEMBER 18 to DECEMBER 7 — The Olean Medical Group Annual HOLIDAY WREATH AUCTION.  Holiday Wreaths and Decorations will be on display on the first floor of the Olean Medical Group, 535 Main Street, Olean, from 7:30 am until 5:15 pm, Monday through Friday.  This is a silent auction to bid on handmade wreaths and unique holiday decorations, with all proceeds going to the Kathi Ward Foundation for Nursing Practice, Inc.  Area businesses and individuals donate all items.  The auction will end promptly at 7:05 pm on December 7th and the last bidders listed on the bid sheet may take their wreaths that evening if they are present.  Otherwise, winning bidders will be phoned.

NOVEMBER 19 — HOLIDAY MARKETPLACE, Good Times Events Center, Olean, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.   The Holiday Marketplace has 30 vendors from all over the four county areas of northwest Pennsylvania and southwest New York.  The vendors are showcasing hand-made items such as blankets, potholders, cowls, doll clothes, boot cuffs, small quilts and quilted items, Alpaca hats, scarves, mittens, socks; Kid cushions.  Vendors will feature wood products: cutting boards, holiday wood items, meat boards, rockers, candle holders.  Handcrafted items include hand made beaded jewelry and Artisan soaps. Even items for family pets are available: dog coats, natural animal products, ornaments, dog and cat toys, and essential oils for animals.

NOVEMBER 19 – KIDS and PARENTS: Get Cooking, St. Bonaventure University, 2 to 4 p.m.  Cooking with your kids can help them try new foods, establish healthier habits and learn an essential life skill.  It can also be super fun for everyone!  At our Kids & Parents: Get Cooking class, you and your child will create a simple but tasty meal together! NOVEMBER 19 – MINDFUL FAMILIES in NATURE, Olean Meditation Center, Olean, 10 a.m. to Noon. Families with children of all ages, as well as grandparents and other extended family members, are welcome to join the Mindful Families as you explore the great outdoors! If the weather’s super bad, they’ll bring a little bit of the outdoors inside for further exploration, but in any event, be sure to dress for the weather. Attendance is free and open to all; donations are gratefully accepted.

NOVEMBER 19, 20 — WINTER ARTS FESTIVAL, Holiday Valley Lodge, Ellicottville, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Fine artist and artisan sale of original works - paintings, photography, jewelry, fiber arts, woodworking, watercolors, drawing and pottery.  The Winter Arts Festival is produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.

NOVEMBER 20 – PRESIDENTS TALK
, Allegany Area Historical Association, 25 North Second Street, Allegany, 2 p.m.  The A.A.H.A. will feature speaker Ellen Sirianni Frank who will talk about the eight U.S. Presidents who were natives of Ohio.  She will discuss the Presidents and the importance on their lives of the homes they lived in while growing up.  Mrs. Frank, a teacher in the Salamanca school system for 32 years, is the Vice-President of the Ellicottville, Historical Society.  The meeting is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.

NOVEMBER 24 – TURKEY TROT, St. Bonaventure University, 9 AM.  FEEL GOOD this Thanksgiving by starting your day with a non-timed 5K at SBU with over 200 other runners & walkers. This annual event is FREE to everyone, but organizers do ask that you bring healthy snacks/foods to donate to the Olean Food Pantry.  Check in at SBU’s Murphy Auditorium from 8-8:45 a.m., and the 5K begins at 9:00 a.m.  Pre-register at the Olean YMCA or call the Y 716-373-2400.  Healthy food suggestions/requests from the Olean Food Pantry: Unsweetened cereal; Oatmeal; Tuna; Canned vegetables; canned fruit in light syrup; and Nuts.

NOVEMBER 24 – JANUARY 1 – HOLIDAY HEALTH STREAK.  Get a jump-start on your New Year resolutions and commit to being active this holiday season! The program begins November 24, Thanksgiving Day and the program ends January 1, New Year’s Day.  The goal is to walk/run 1 mile per day or participates in 20 minutes of physical activity (activity that is outside of your daily routine).

You will need to chart your activity on the program calendar.  If you complete ALL 39 days, you will receive 3 chances in the random drawing for a prize. Complete 30 days and receive 1 chance.

You need to register on the Holiday Health Streak form by November 23.  You will receive weekly newsletters with tips and recipes to keep you motivated.  Join the OGH Holiday Health Streak Facebook group for support and guidance.

Four winners will be drawn for these prizes: two $50 Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Gift Cards; one $50 gift card to Sports Locker; and one month pass to the Olean Family YMCA

Completed forms should be submitted to [email protected] or dropped off at the Olean General Hospital Gift Shop or Marketing Department, the Olean Family YMCA front desk or Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce. Calendars will be given at time of registration.

NOVEMBER 26 — BLACK FRIDAY PICTURE FRAME ORNAMENT, Home Depot, Olean, 9 a.m. to Noon.  Take a shopping break and join their hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a keepsake for your holiday memories! You’ll work together to create a picture frame ornament, perfect for adding some personalized decoration to your Christmas tree. Once the ornament is built, your child can decorate it with paint & add their photo of family fun.
All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.  Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.

By managing time more effectively, participants will be able to make a greater contribution to the organization’s goals – they will be more effective at work but will still be able to achieve a sensible work / life balance.
