LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR SHEILA Y. OLIVER

1970 WEEQUAHIC GRADUATE

The WHS Class of 1970 has begun planning and raising money for a memorial at the school in honor of the late Lieutenant Governor of the State of NJ, Sheila Y. Oliver. She was the first female and the first Black woman to serve in this capacity in the history of the state.

As a product of the Newark Public School system (graduating from Chancellor Avenue and Weequahic), she believed passionately in the power of education. L.G. Oliver loved Weequahic and she was a strong advocate for keeping the school open as a public school when the State had control. Her life was dedicated to public service and advocacy, and she believed that “if you want to be a catalyst for change, you have to be in the driver seat.”

The tribute to her legacy includes a commissioned portrait to be placed inside the building in her honor, and having the school's Media Center renamed for her. Any funds raised beyond the cost of the portrait will be used to establish a scholarship in her memory through the WHSAA.

If you'd like to contribute, please do so through the WHSAA Scholarship Fund. The link to the website is: WHSAA Scholarship Donations

Or, you can donate through Zelle at weequahicalumni@gmail.com.

Or you can send a check to WHSAA, PO Box 494, Newark, NJ 07101

In all cases, please put Sheila Oliver in the memo line

AROUND THE BUILDING

Over the past two summers, the Media Center (which many of us remember as the Cafeteria) received a much needed update with a new floor, furniture and new paint.

Not to mention that Untermann Field was also renovated--including a new digital scoreboard!

The school is 90 years old and the bones are holding up well.

CELEBRATING WEEQUAHIC FAMILY

Thelma ((Goldberg) Gottlieb celebrated her 104th Birthday in November. She graduated from Weequahic in June, 1937, in the first four-year class to finish at the new high school. Her yearbook quote:

"To those who know thee not, no words can paint,

And to those who know thee, all words are faint."

COACH LEONARD (LENNIE) MOORE recently celebrated his 88th birthday and a number of WHS alumni drove by his home to celebrate with him!

HE'S A WEEQUAHIC INSTITUTION!
