THE OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD FOR JUNE goes to Paul Hans Thompson!!!
Paul has devoted so much of his passion, time and energy toward the betterment of our school community this year. Paul has served several years on the Board of Trustees. He has captained the Long Range Planning Committee, which has been diligently surveying our entire school this year, in hopes of making concrete, our united visions of the future. In so doing, this group is working on an updated mission statement for the Whatcom Hills Waldorf School-one which they hope will accurately reflect our community values and goals. Paul also somehow manages to be a leader within our school's Site Committee. This group assesses and maintains the care taking of our beautiful grounds and assures that our buildings are aging gracefully and safely. Paul is truly an invaluable asset here at WHWS. Please be sure to congratulate Paul when you see him on campus. He is the gentle, bespectacled fellow with the most lovely accent. Paul will be awarded a SCRIP card for his efforts.
The WHWS Parent Council would like to extend a most heartfelt "Thank You" to the following families:
Sokol, Freedman, Compain, Lipson, Claassen, Rusk, Van Veen, Korbmacher, Farkas, Evans, Spacov, and Enderle.
These folks brought food to Tuesday Staff Meetings throughout the year, in support of our teachers and staff members.
Most sincerely,
Dani Compain
PC Chair

Dear Katie...Seora Wheatley
| |
This week, along with ten eighth graders and their class teacher, we also bid adios to our beloved Spanish teacher of 14 years. Although appreciations and thanks were shared at an event last week, there were many who could not attend. For those I offer this sample of our gratitude.
Dear Katie...Seora Wheatley~
You have been such a valuable and lovely colleague and friend during my years teaching here. And an inspiration. I remember the years when my children were in your classes--they were bringing avocados to make guacamole and bringing photographs of their grandparents for Dia de Los Muertos and making beautiful paper flowers to decorate Bloedel Donovan for Cinco de Mayo. They remember--we ALL remember--your yummy foods (especially at our graduations). You always brought the culture from the countries they studied in such a vivid way. I remember a time when each year a class would perform a play in Spanish and how utterly remarkable that was. I remember in particular when Aiyana was in 7th or 8th grade and you brought authentic instruments from South America and you and your daughter Sarah taught them to play these instruments and sing songs that you had learned by ear from your visits there. Songs that we won't find in any book anywhere.
I've watched as you have prepared our middle schoolers for high school Spanish, meeting with the high school Spanish teachers so you know what it is the students need to know and making sure they are ready. You have held high standards for our students. Both of my children and many others were able to step right into Spanish II and have excelled. And I believe that it is their familiarity with not only Spanish, but the cultures of Central and South America that have inspired so many of our alumni to study abroad in those countries. There are students from our school who have spent 6 months to a year in Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Honduras, Mexico, or Costa Rica during their high school years. One is there now! And as a parent of one of those students I am SO grateful for your support in writing letters, and translating documents and generally supporting me during that very long year. And my son Sean is studying Chinese in college and on his way to Taiwan, because, well, once you've learned English, German and Spanish, what's a little Chinese!
So I'm gonna miss you when you're gone, but what I will selfishly miss most is all the long hours you put in for our school as a colleague, coordinating the assemblies, the newsletter articles, and bringing outside speakers to our school, being our staff liaison to the Parent Council and the festivals, and chairing the Community Committee of the Collegium--because I bet I'm gonna have to do a bunch of that next year. Thanks for sharing your office with me and for helping me navigate the path of the specialty teacher. And as someone at the celebration said, thanks for all your "clandestine" activities that made it possible for our school to carry on. Few will ever know the depth of your love for and support of our sweet school.
I hope your future holds many new adventures in traveling, languages (I know you speak several others as well) and cultures, balanced with long and leisurely intervals in your garden. And a little cooking. Do let me know if you need a taster! All the Best, ~Beth/Ms. Beyers
