DECEMBER 2021
I love Advent. It is my favorite time of the year, but for me it often brings mixed feelings. I love the Advent hymns, the lighting of the Advent Wreath and all of the anticipation that goes along with the season. At the same time, I am reminded of the darkness of winter that comes after Christmas. I really hate the cold and darkness of that season. After the Christmas Season, that long, dark time of the year is no fun for me. Each year, much of the excitement of Advent and Christmas fades into gloomy weeks of that frigd, desolate time. This year I am doing a better job preparing not only for the birth of our Savior, but also what comes after that. I am praying for the grace of the Advent and Christmas Seasons to propel me into that "post-Christmas" time with a renewed faith.
I am praying that this Advent will be a time of deep renewal in my life. I am praying that the Lord Jesus comes into my life more deeply. I am praying that the Joy of Christmas sustains and uplifts me for the entire year. Pray for me and Holy Family Radio.

Spiritual Advisor's Corner

Have you seen the Valentine's Day Decorations around yet? How about St. Patrick's Day? I know it's only the beginning of December, but have you noticed how quickly everyone wants to "move on" from the season we're currently celebrating? Just a day after Halloween, the grocery store I go to moved all its cooking chocolate into a Christmas display! That didn't take long, did it?

We're so used to looking ahead to holidays and when they are actually here, we've moved on to the next one. We are not used to "living in the moment." But the Christian life is all about living in the moment, and living in the season.

Advent is difficult to "live in," because our world prepares for Christmas beginning in November. When I was a kid, I always enjoyed the Advent calendar. It was a little bit of Christmas, but it stressed the need to wait, to prepare. And it gave you a little chocolate as a taste of the greatness to come.

Our Advent needs to be a bit like an Advent Calendar. Every day, we need to be given a taste of the great feast to come and a taste of the gift of the Savior, but we need to know we are not quite there!

A good way to prepare would be to read the Daily Advent Readings from Mass, which include prophecies of those who lived hundreds of years before the Messiah. The prophesies are from Israelites who were desperate for a Messiah who can save them, because they're either living in exile, or just feel defeated. They needed help, and they were crying out for a savior.

Unlike those prophets, how blessed are we to live in a time where we know He exists! But we take this knowledge for granted. By reading the prophets, we can see just how desperate they were for a Messiah and we can grow in gratitude that we have been given such a gift at Christmas.

Happy Advent! If we prepare for the great Feast of Christmas this Advent, not looking ahead but by living in the moment, we'll understand the true gift we are given, and receive the joy of the season.

Prayer for Advent

My hidden Lord Jesus, I love You and thank You with profound gratitude for uniting Yourself with fallen humanity. When You first entered into this world, You remained hidden for nine months in the immaculate womb of Your Blessed Mother. She carried You, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, within the sanctuary of her body. She also carried You within her heart as a result of her perfect love for You and her perfect obedience to the will of the Father.
Precious Lord, as I embrace this Advent Season, please open my eyes to see the great value and blessing of Your Incarnation. Help me to discover Your hidden presence in this world and within my own soul. I desire to see, understand and experience the profound effects that Your Incarnation has on my life and I desire to receive those effects more fully this Advent. May I become a sanctuary in which You dwell so that I, like Your dear Mother, may bring Your presence into the world.

My loving Jesus, I choose You, this Advent, as my King and my God. I abandon myself to You and seek to put all my trust in Your tender care. Draw me close to You and free me from my sin so that I may love You with a pure and holy heart.

Mother Mary, as You carried your dear Son in your immaculate womb, you also carried Him in your heart. Pray for me, this Advent, that I may surrender myself to the will of the Father in imitation of you. You said “Yes” to all that God asked of you and never hesitated to fully embrace His Divine Will. Pray that I may imitate your perfect example so as to share a deeper union with you and your Divine Son.

Come, Lord Jesus,
Come, Lord Jesus,
Come, Lord Jesus!
Amen.

Joke of the Month
The pastor asked the sign maker in the parish to donate a big sign for the Christmas Season. “Now do it exactly as I have written on the piece of paper”, the pastor ordered the man. And make sure you have it up in time. Sure enough, as people walked into the church, they found his banner: “Unto us, a Child is born ten feet long and three feet wide”.
