JUNE 2024

June has an often overlooked holiday. We celebrate Flag Day on June 14th. This day commemorates the ideals of liberty, justice and the sacrifices made to protect them. The first Flag Day was celebrated in 1877, 100 years after the Continental Congress adopted our flag. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day in May 1916. In 1949, President Harry Truman officially made Flag Day a day of national observance. Although Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, Pennsylvania celebrates the day as a state holiday.

Each year the U.S. President delivers an address that proclaims the week of June 14 as National Flag Week, and all Americans are encouraged to fly U.S. flags during that week. Please take some time for a prayer of thanksgiving for our country as you fly the Stars and Stripes this year.

Speaking of thanks, I want to thank all of our listeners who made a donation during our Spring Pledge Drive. I also wish to thank the volunteers and guests who help make it a success.

Father Timothy Sahd

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Every prayer of the Mass is profound. Sometimes, we hear them so many times that we take them for granted and we allow them to wash over us.

There was one prayer, though, at Mass a few weeks ago that made me stop. It was the "Collect," or the Opening Prayer of Mass. It was, "Grant, we pray, almighty God, that always pondering spiritual things..." I stopped there. I just said in the prayer that I "always" pondered spiritual things.

Is that correct? NO! So many times I fail and worry about worldly things. I worry about my reputation, my struggles or my well-being. I sin. I think about a lot of things that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with spiritual things.

It's no coincidence that I wonder where God is when I feel lost. I'm not even pondering Him. No wonder I sin over and over again. I am not pondering Him. As Ordinary Time continues, let's focus on ALWAYS pondering spiritual things so that we'll always feel His presence and His love! God bless you,

Fr. Sahd

Update from Russ Fry

They say that if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person. Well, we here at Holy Family Radio are getting things done! Women’s and 50+ Conferences, a Pledge Drive and equipment upgrades were happening in May. We wish to thank the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph Church, Mechanicsburg for hosting a Bingo Event with all of the proceeds going to WHYF. We continue the momentum into June with another Women’s Conference at Hershey Convention the 1st. We will be helping the Legion of Mary to greet attendees at the Mechanicsburg Jubilee Day on June 20. We also are planning the addition of two new shows and a series on Catholic Apologetics in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more details on those shows. I would be remiss in not thanking our great volunteers that are helping us to get all these things accomplished. One of the long-time volunteers helping us to do the grunt work is Joe Murphy, our Senior Producer. He even helps us out at some of the conferences, so come out to meet him. Thank you to our listeners, too! Without you, there would be no Holy Family Radio.
