Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Christ!
I was about a mile away from home a few weeks ago in my car, when I got stopped in a bit of a traffic jam on a side street. All of the sudden, I heard a loud screeching sound from behind. I turned and saw a car racing up the shoulder of the road past me and the other cars lined up. It hit the curb, hit an electrical box (wiping out the electricity for the entire block), flipped over three times, and landed next to a telephone pole, upside down.
I was shocked. I got out of my car to help, but also called 9-1-1. The operator asked where I was located. I went blank. I was in shock. All of the sudden, a young man jumped out of the trunk. The driver was ok, and no one else was in the car! Thank God! How did he get out of this without a scratch?! I still don't believe it.
Life is such a tenuous thing. One minute, we're driving aimlessly, listening to music or thinking about nothing. The next, we could be tragically hurt in a car crash. Life is so fragile. Thankfully in our situation, the driver was unharmed. But not everyone is so lucky.
We live this life in preparation of the next life. Nothing is guaranteed in this world, but Jesus does guarantee that if we follow Him, we will live with Him forever in heaven. We live this life in expectation of the world to come! How often do I worry about the little things here, but completely ignore the great things of the world to come? I so often lose perspective.
This Easter, let's take the time to focus on what is in front of us: Eternal Life in Heaven. That way, we'll prepare for that moment when, as the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass says, "we stand before you (God), saints among the saints in the Halls of Heaven." If we do not live the Sacramental life, that moment will come and we will be standing somewhere else. God bless you!
