September 2024

September is a time of transition. Transition implies change. Many of us don't like change. Change makes us feel uneasy. As we move into the Autumn season, I need to be reminded that change is an integral part of life and we need to embrace it.

“To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven..."Turn, Turn, Turn" written by Pete Seeger back in 1959 and made popular by the Byrds in 1965. (The lyrics are taken almost verbatim from the book of Ecclesiastes, as found in the King James Version of the Bible.)

This verse reminds me that change is inevitable and that each season of life serves a purpose ordained by a greater plan.

September is a time for me to mediate on Ecclesiastes Chapter 3:

There is an appointed time for everything,

and a time for every affair under the heavens.

A time to give birth, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.

A time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to tear down, and a time to build.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance.

A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them;

a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.

A time to seek, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to cast away.

A time to rend, and a time to sew;

a time to be silent, and a time to speak.

A time to love, and a time to hate;

a time of war, and a time of peace.

Join me in accepting God's timing of change in everything!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

When I was away on vacation, I learned that female sea turtles can swim 10,000 miles in one year, between where they lay their eggs and where they eat. I couldn't walk that far if I wanted! Ten thousand miles! Yet, when they lay their eggs, they always return to the same location to where they last laid their eggs; within yards. How in the world do they know where to go after swimming all of those miles?!

Our souls have that same memory -- they are connected to our Divine God in such a way that, when we sin and drift thousands of miles away from the right path, they do not get lost. Instantly, when we return to our God in the Sacrament of Confession, they return us to the right path. There is no sin -- no distance we can remove ourselves from God -- that we cannot get back to Him. Our souls are the organ inside of us that have the connection with God that allows us to return to Him! What a great gift.

Never lose hope. Never feel lost. Our Savior has given us everything we need to be with Him forever! God bless you,

Fr. Sahd

September: The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

(September 15)

Mary’s Immaculate Heart is often depicted as pierced by seven swords, representing the sorrows that she experienced with and alongside her Son. In perfect obedience to God and His will, Mary consented to her Son’s passion and death, entering into His sorrow in a way only a mother can.

How to celebrate: Pray the Seven Sorrows Rosary or meditate with Luke 2:34-35 when Simeon prophesied the sorrows Mary would undergo.
