Connecting the Dots
Welcome to our April newsletter.

Wisconsin CONNECT is a collaborative. We seek to provide technical assistance and training opportunities for substance use prevention and treatment grantees, providers, clinicians, social workers, and support staff.

We draw on local and national academic and community resources to reduce and prevent substance use and improve overall health and wellness in Wisconsin.

To that end, we want to help you connect the dots with this newsletter. It is a tool to support our efforts to promote new research, share tools and trainings that aim to help you engage in different communities, enhance practice and improve the health of your clients and program participants.

Community consequences of the opioid epidemic
from AAPSS and UW

This webinar on the community consequences of the opioid epidemic is hosted by the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) and the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin.

The conversation drew on findings and insights from the latest volume of the AAPSS journal, The ANNALS, which uses data from local, state and federal sources to investigate how opioid use disorder impacts the effectiveness of our education system, strains social services including child welfare agencies, and creates fiscal burdens across social welfare infrastructure. Each of the panelists contributed to the volume.

For a limited time, this volume of The ANNALS is free courtesy of SAGE Publications.
New NIH Study Reveals Shared Genetic Markers Commonly Inherited Across Substance Use Disorders

A recent study conducted by researchers at Washington University with support from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), identified shared genetic markers commonly inherited across substance use disorders (SUD), regardless of the substance being used. The study also found that the combination of genes underlying SUDs was also associated with the regulation of dopamine signaling. The researchers hope these results may help uncover new treatment targets across several SUDs, including for people diagnosed with multiple SUDs. NIH’s press release announcing the study’s findings can be found here.
