$5 Million - Statewide Grant Funding

You asked - We listened

We asked - the Governor listened

The Governor's biennial budget was announced on Tuesday night and with it $5 million to support municipal purchases of winter road safety improvement equipment.

We proposed this program, modeled after the H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant program, to the Governor's staff this summer. The dollars would be available for a variety of equipment: pavement temperature sensors, sectional, live-edge, or sectional blades, remote weather stations, pre-wet systems, anti-icing systems, etc.

This is STEP ONE towards making this program a reality and accelerating the adoption of salt wise practices across Wisconsin.

STEP TWO will require us to reach out to legislators. Republicans in control of the Joint Finance Committee need to understand that investments in Salt Wise equipment support long-lasting salt and $$$ savings.

Salt Wise Stories:

City of Glendale

Wednesday, March 12

12pm CT

Late 2021, the City of Glendale's Streets Department purchased a retired tanker truck from their fire department and converted it into a brine unit for anti-icing and direct liquid applications. Ricky Neth, Glendale's mechanic, had the creative vision for this project and the know-how and persistence to see it through. Listen to his story and get inspired to take the next step at your agency.

Mini Weather Stations:

What's all the Buzz?

Wednesday, April 2

12pm CT

Road/pavement temperature and condition information is crucial for efficient and effective winter maintenance operations. Eric Faulkner, Vaisala, and Mike Bott, Frost Solutions, will bring in real-world examples that illustrate how remote weather information supports decisions on resource allocation, staff deployment, type and amount of treatment material used, the timing of operations, and safer surfaces.

Dustin Peterson, Chippewa Valley Technical College Groundskeeper, engineered and built this brine maker and brine storage system. CVTC has also purchased two UTV sprayers for brine applications to sidewalks.

Darren Gilgen, CVTC Director of Facilities, says "after attending the WI Salt Wise Workshop in November 2024, I learned that we needed to change our snow/ice control processes immediately. Quite simply, we were using far too much salt and ice melt on our lots and walks. It was eye-opening! With the information provided in the workshop, I recognized opportunities to be more sustainable with little investment.

We have seen at least a 30% decrease in salt/ice melt usage by making our own brine and utilizing it throughout our Clairemont and West Campuses. With our proximity to the Chippewa River, I felt that it was vital to do something to protect those waters. I’m an avid angler, it’s the least I can do to aid in protecting that resource for future generations of anglers.”

I want to promote an upcoming evening webinar for business owners, property managers, homeowners and condo association board members, and others who contract with road salt applicators and snow removal companies during the winter.

The webinar by Abby Hileman, Izaak Walton League of America, and Jason Swope, Chesapeake Conservation Landscape Council.

Attendees will learn what oversalting vs proper salting looks like, why smart salting is important, how to save money while maintaining safety during the winter, preparing your property for the winter, how to find a contractor who follows best practices, and how to write a contract around performance-based road salt application.
