Safe Sport Chair

Monna Arvinen-Barrow

Monna grew up in Finland and spent all her free time at a local ice rink as a figure skater, and later as a figure- and synchronized skating coach. She got involved in swimming in 2004, by starting baby swimming lessons with her 4-month-old daughter Amie. After swimming for both Shorewood Swim Club and Shorewood High School, Amie is now a sophomore at Brown University, and a member of the women’s swim & dive team.

Monna currently serves Wisconsin Swimming as the Safe Sport Chair. Over the past decade, you may have also seen Monna at swim meets as a swim official. Her “real” job is at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she works as an associate professor in sport and performance psychology. She also teaches part time for University of St. Augustine, FL, and is the establishing Editor-in-Chief for the Journal for Advancing Sport Psychology in Research.

Monna is a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol.) and an Associate Fellow (AFBPsS) of the British Psychological Society, Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) and a Fellow (FAASP) of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, a Certified Mental Performance Coach and Exercise Practitioner (UPV sert.) of the Finnish Psychological Association. She provides sport and performance psychology consultation services to athletes and coaches in various sports and competitive levels.

WSI Safe Sport Resources

13 Clubs nationwide completed their Safe Sport Club Recognition Program in July 2023. Is yours next?

USA Swimming Safe Sport has created a Safe Sport Club Recognition Program to promote a culture that fosters physical and psychosocial safety of everyone involved in swimming. While the program is not yet required for clubs by the USA Swimming, the rumor has it that it will be in a not-too-distant future. As an LSC, let’s make Wisconsin 100% Safe Sport recognized sooner rather than later!

To get you started:

1.     Don’t forget that the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy must be acknowledged annually.

2.     USA Swimming Safe Sport offers Safe Sport training for athletes, coaches, parents, officials, and meet marshals in September and October. This is a great way to start the Safe Sport Club Recognition process!

3.     Don’t forget to check out Wisconsin Swimming Safe Sport page for help in getting your started.
