National Disability Employment Awareness Month

This October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This is a good time to spread awareness of the people with disabilities who are just starting out or have been active in the workforce for quite some time. It’s important to highlight the fact that people with disabilities can be just as committed and professional enough to thrive in a working environment, as well as acknowledge the contributions that they add to their places of employment.

It is also important to acknowledge that employees with disabilities need access to specific accommodations to make their transition into the workforce more adjustable to their needs, as well as ensure that they are comfortable in their environment so that they are able to do their jobs more effectively and to the best of their abilities.

I myself have a disability, being hard of hearing, and using hearing aid devices, as well as other listening devices to allow me to be comfortable working in my office space, and to communicate well with others..

For those who have disabilities, and as well as looking for help with finding employment, WILC can provide resources to help individuals with their needs to lead independent lives, as well as help them navigate how to best approach those issues head-on.

November 19th Resource & Transition Fair

Social Security Administration Action

Last week, the Social Security Administration began mailing notices to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients aged 14 to 17 and their representatives. These notices provide information on policies and resources to help youth transition to adulthood. The letters include a QR code to the Youth Resources webpage and details about the publication What You Need to Know About Your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) When You Turn 18.

The publication covers topics such as age-18 redetermination, work incentives, education funds, and ABLE accounts. It’s available for download in both English and Spanish on the agency’s website. Recipients are encouraged to share these resources with foster care and youth transition programs.
