From the Principal
One Hour

This Sunday, March 13, at 2 a.m., most peoples' clocks are moved ahead one hour. How does that loss of one hour of sleep impact you? How does it affect others around you? It is a big adjustment; ask families with little children. For others, it does not make a significant impact. Perhaps you think that one hour does not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of life.

As we continue through the season of Lent, we will see our Savior again say to his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane, "Couldn't you men keep watch with me for one hour?" Too often, we also grow tired, and we fail to keep watch in our lives of service for Christ. God be praised for forgiving our sins and the salvation he has won for us through his suffering, death, and resurrection.

What a blessing that we have to learn about this salvation each hour and day at the Academy! May he help us never to grow tired of that mission! May God continue to bless you and your family during this Lent Season.

International Students
Winnebago Lutheran Academy is already beginning to place international students for the 2022-23 school year! This is a great opportunity to learn about another culture, as well as share our own culture and witness our faith. If you might be interested in hosting an international student (for one semester or the whole year) please email kmose@wlavikings.org for more information. Hosts receive a monthly stipend to help cover the cost of room and board.
Athletics & Fine Arts
We are so thankful for the talents God has given our students at WLA. We also rejoice in the gifts and dedication of our Coaches and Directors. Those God-given abilities have been on display all year here at the Academy, including this past winter!

Forensics Team members are busy preparing for the District meet on March 14th and the Conference meet on March 28th.

Theater Our talented cast and crew were busy with 10 total performances over 4 days this past week. The crowds loved both shows, A Hairy Tale and Squad Goals. Great job done by all involved!

Viking Cheer and Stunt team One of the youngest teams to compete at the varsity level, the WLA team held their own with teams across the state at their 3 competitions this year. We are proud of their hard work and look forward to what God has in store for this team in the next couple years.

Mission Advancement News
Interview with an Alumni: Nathan Pausma,
Class of 2020
You graduated just a few years ago; have you noticed any big differences changes at WLA since you were a student here?
Most of the teachers are the same, the same smiles of students, and there is still the same aura and environment that was here when I was here; a type of comradery. It's the same important Biblical and leadership lessons being taught and learned. There are some new teachers and staff members, as well as some slight improvements like a new program for the news screens, a better way to display plaques, and changes in the weight room.
Which teachers during your time at WLA were especially impactful and how?
All of the teachers made an impact on me in different ways, but the one that stands out to me the most is Pastor Haag. I got to see him on the soccer pitch every day and at practice during soccer season and had him in the classroom quite a bit too, but he definitely made the biggest impact. His selflessness, and how you can just see and tell that he loves what he's talking about and what he is doing. I saw how much he enjoyed doing the things he did and how he acted as such a great leader and example for me. I wanted to be just like that for kids and others in the future.
What words would you have to encourage others to attend MLC and become a called worker?
I would point them to Romans 12:6-8. We all have been given different gifts and we all have gifts that allow us to serve the LORD in different ways. Those different ways include being a layperson, and we need strong lay people in our churches and schools, because they make a bigger difference in our congregation than people think. Another way is to serve in public ministry, and this isn't any better than being a layperson and doing other God-pleasing work, but working in ministry is a huge honor and privilege. I am simply training to be in the ministry, but in that training, I have had the opportunity to see how the Gospel works and the power it has. In my training, I've had the opportunity to go to Maryland, Ohio, and Texas to help out some churches there, and let me tell you, there is power in God's Word. God's Word is the one thing that won't change and it's something that you can take with you wherever you go, whether that is having the privilege of serving the Lord every day in your career or having the privilege of serving the Lord in the public ministry. Each one of us is a minister and has the opportunity to share God's Word with those we meet. To see what I have in my training makes me excited to see what is in store for me and all other people preparing to serve, as well as those already serving in the public ministry. We get to see every day, first hand, what the power of God's Word and the gospel message of Christ crucified can do in people's lives. You don't get to see that type of stuff in any other career! God has truly given me some pretty amazing grace to be able to, hopefully, one day serve as one of those people who gets to see the way He works each and every day.
Nathan is in his second year in the pre-seminary track at Martin Luther College, in New Ulm, MN. He participates in track and soccer. Nathan is also involved in the Student Senate and has had the honor of being a Student Ambassador on campus.

What is a Donor Advised Fund?
By setting up a donor-advised fund, you create a lasting legacy and help to do the Lord’s work. In addition, giving is an act of worship, another way to offer your Lord a thankful response for his never-failing gifts.

A donor advised fund is a charitable giving vehicle wherein an individual, family, or corporation makes an irrevocable, tax-deductible contribution of cash, securities, or other property to WELS Foundation and at any time thereafter can recommend grant distributions to qualified WELS ministries. The fund can be established with current gifts, deferred gifts (such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts), and testamentary gifts (such as wills, revocable trusts, or beneficiary designation for life insurance policies or retirement accounts).

To learn more about this type of planned gift, please get in touch with our Mission Advancement Office
