In a big win for the language enterprise this past Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted unanimously to include the World Language Advancement and Readiness Act (WLARA) as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY2020.

WLARA seeks to expand language learning at the elementary and secondary levels. Passage of WLARA has been a multi-year initiative for JNCL-NCLIS and Wednesday marked the bill's latest advancement through Congress.

A second federal judge has issued an order permanently blocking the Trump administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census in any form, despite the Trump administration's insistence it has abandoned plans to add the question on the census.

The latest order is from Judge George Hazel who is overseeing a case in federal court in Maryland. New York federal judge Jesse Furman issued a nearly identical order Tuesday.

Both judges will also continue to monitor the controversial issue, saying they will both retain jurisdiction in the case until the 2020 census results are processed.

The language we choose to use about the environment matters. But is anyone really paying attention? The general public doesn’t seem particularly alarmed so far. When the unbearable heat of summer is something to be viewed comfortably from a window, keeping nature and its insidious dangers very much at bay, how can we really feel the full impact of what’s happening out there in the world?

Measured language about environmental crises is valuable in the right contexts. But it turns out that language has a much more powerful role to play in ecological survival than just describing the disturbing environmental outlook . And if we can effectively use language to help to save the natural world, well, language may also end up saving itself.

July 14, 2019 | Big Think
There are about 6,500-7,000 languages currently spoken in the world. But that's less than a quarter of all the languages people spoke over the course of human history. That total number is around 31,000 languages, according to some linguistic estimates.  Every time a language is lost, so goes that way of thinking, of relating to the world . The relationships, the poetry of life uniquely described through that language are lost too.

But what if you could figure out how to read the dead languages? Researchers from MIT and Google Brain created an AI-based system that can accomplish just that.
