March 2020
A Message from Our President
Nothing quite warms the heart or fills the soul as does WMC's annual Winners Recital, held on March 1. In all my nearly fifty years of attending this event, I can safely say the performances on this program were among the highest levels I've ever heard. It was a great joy to welcome in the audience some family members of named scholarships: Mackey and Nancy Tilman, Victoria Blackford, and Anne Hindman with her daughter, Laura D'Onofrio.

At the recital I announced that next year's event will be held at The Center at Belvedere, featuring our beautiful brand new piano. The Center's Grand Opening will take place on April 18, 2020, which I encourage you to attend. For information on the different events scheduled between 10am - 3pm that day, click here and consider adding The Center at Belvedere to your bookmarked websites.

The 2020 WMC Winners Recital Report

"Amazing!" "Outstanding performances!" "So highly skilled!"

These and other compliments were overheard on Sunday afternoon, March 1, following a very successful recital performed by the winners of this year's WMC Competition. The audience included proud parents and family members, teachers, friends, and WMC members. Winners in the Junior and Senior Camp Scholarship categories as well as in the High School and Senior categories delighted the audience with their varied musical selections from classical to contemporary pieces. Ages of these talented musicians ranged from 10 to 17. Pianist Peter Chung won both in the Senior Camp and Composition categories. Instruments this year included piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and harp. Following the recital, the winners and audience members enjoyed a reception of sweets and savories provided by WMC members.

The photo below was taken before the performance. A complete list of Competition winners and their scholarships are listed on the WMC website . Team lead Mary Vee Connell, Chair of the Competition Committee, ensured a smooth-running performance, supported by Committee members Michele Carrigan, Anna Farrell, Dorrit Green, Cheryl Lewis, Rosalyn Preston, and Susan Thomas.

WMC Launches the Alma Huesing Summer Piano Camp
Some wild excitement is planned for this summer as we launch (2nd time's the charm) the Inaugural Alma Huesing Piano Camp. All Intermediate to Advanced level students, ages 10-13, are invited to apply. The lucky 12 who get in will be treated to outstanding hands-on lessons with Lise Keiter (Mary Baldwin College) and John Mayhood (UVA), fun and games involving theory, composing their own music, and other related activities. For pianists who do most of their work alone, this will be a fun time to network with other pianists. It will take place every morning, 8am - noon during the week of July 13th. If you have students, grandchildren, neighbors or know of anyone who might be interested, please pass the word. See or email Barbara Moore for a brochure or go to the WMC website for more information.
