President's Message,
Kathy Perry
February has been an interesting month in the Seattle area. Snow is not our friend and many of us had a couple of feet fall in our yards and streets. I have included as couple of pictures from my home in the snow. Case managers are nothing but resourceful and I want to thank everyone for attending the last meeting via the webinar. It was very informative educational offering. I am in the process of obtaining the files we can use for patient education.

As we move forward this year, we have lots of educational offerings. We have an exciting line up for the Spring Conference May 9th. Our topic is "Stem to Limb-Advances in Case Management". Our speakers will be focusing on the advances in case management.

Our Keynote speaker will be Jose Alejandro the current CMSA president speaking on the future of case management. I know Jose from attending the national conference and he is an engaging speaker and will have lots of new information for us. We will have our vendor support and posters for additional CEUs. The day will be packed with educational opportunities and networking. Early bird registration is out, the link is under Spring Conference 2019 of this newsletter.

We will have 2 other conferences later in the year. A mini conference in August at Warm Beach Conference Center and our annual Fall Conference in October at the Embassy Suites in Lynnwood. Our monthly luncheons will have education as well.

As I close this newsletter, I want to remind you of the National CMSA conference in Las Vegas June 10th-14th, 2019. If you have never been, it's a great opportunity to meet case managers from other regions of the country and find out the latest trends in case management. WMCMA will be sending in a group registration at the end of March which will provide you a discount on the registration fee. The registration fee for the conference will also give you a year's membership to CMSA/WMCMA. I hope several of you will be able to attend.

We are continuing to plan our events for 2019 and if you have ideas please let me know or anyone on the board. You can email us at comtactwmcma@gmail.com.

Thanks for taking the time to read the newsletter and hope to see you at the March meeting.

Sincerely,
Kathy Parry, BSN, RN, CCM

February 2019 Meeting Report

"WMCMA February Meeting Weathers the Storm"
What a fantastic time to live in a world of technology where we can still have our WMCMA February 2019 meeting during inclement weather conditions!  Even though we had to cancel our on-site event, we were still able to attend a live teleconference and learn some valuable skills and information.

"E.M.A: Tools for Successful Behavior Change. Empowerment, Motivational Interviewing and Adult Behavior Change"

with Mary Ann Hodorowicz, RND, MBA, CDE, Certified Endrocinology Coder, as our special guest speaker

February 14, 2019 was a fabulous way to experience a live webinar while learning theses great tools.

Feedback:
There was great feedback for the meeting.  So much of this information could be applied not just to case management but for many areas of our life.

"Great examples that were practical and could be implemented same day!"

"I have studied and practiced MI and this was by far the best, accessible information yet.  Breaks down principles of adult learning!"

We had wonderful success for this live teleconference/webinar!

T hank you for your webinar attendance and  for understanding the safety of our members, guests, and speaker is our first priority.

We especially want to thank

Mary Ann Hodorowicz,
RND, MBA, CDE, Certified Endrocinology Coder,

Mary gave an outstanding presentation  and was flexible given the inclement weather conditions.

We also want to thank
Embassy Suites-Lynnwood for being so gracious and accommodating with us cancelingl the event.  They have agreed to be the venue for the Fall Conference so we look forward to working with them in the near future.

Thank you to the following sponsors  that helped make this event a success!

Thank you Option Care for sponsoring our beautiful event centerpieces!

"Case Management" by Mary Hughes

I started in case management in 1993 by accepting a position with a well-known commercial insurer. Not having had any "formal" case management experience, I quickly sought out a relatively new group called 'Case Management Association'.  The group in Seattle had started with brown bag lunches around a fountain at noon.   By the time I started, they were meeting in the Rainier Club.   I quickly learned it was the go-to place for networking and learned  "the basics" of case management while  networking round the table.

I soon began to gain confidence, and developed my own network of individuals to "go-to"  for advice, resources, etc.  I soon began to feel the success of ensuring someone had quality care through advocacy, helping a client work with their physician or ensuring quality care.

I realized that I had probably been a case manager since graduation, wanting to be sure everything was in place, that they had everything they needed, for someone going home, for example.

Case management is all about the person, not just money saved.  By ensuring quality of care, savings always follows.  The Case Manager educates, not only the patient, but those who are caregivers as well.  The Case Manager ensures; the team is supporting the patient and family.  The Case Manager is the pivotal role in the healing of the patient by ensuring that all is being done for this patient, that someone is looking out for them.  There may be a dog at home, unattended.  Getting a rescue for that animal, can help its owner get better, for example.

I am passionate in assuring quality care for patients.  Taking an extra minute or two with a patient can mean the difference between worry and relaxation, knowing someone took time to listen and help solve a problem that was a worry to the patient/family or loved one and impeding progress in recovery.

By attending the Washington Medical Case Management Association monthly luncheons, of which 2 of these are all day workshops, all offering continuing education, we are able to keep our certifications current, and education up to date.

I am passionate about case management because I know that improved health care means a "win-win" for everyone.
