July 2019 President's Message

Happy 4th of July! Summer is upon us with all the outdoor activities including barbecues, hiking, biking and camping. It's a great time to re-connect with friends and family. I enjoy this time of year as I get outside in my garden and travel to eastern Washington and Montana.

It's been a month since the National CMSA conference in Las Vegas.  The conference is time to make connections with other chapters, re-connect with colleagues and learn new trends in case management. The keynote speakers were very inspirational and motivating. One of the biggest take-away was we take care of patients however it's very important to take time for ourselves.  The educational offerings were varied making it difficult to chose what to attend. The educational sessions are available on the CMSA website in their educational section and available for CE credit. I am encouraging you all to attend next year's conference in Boston. The conference is celebrating 30 years of care transitions across the full continuum. We should have good representation from WMCMA as our chapter is one of the first chapters and I believe we will be celebrations 30 years next year.

WMCMA has several events planned through the rest of the year. The next event is our 2nd annual mini conference at the Warm Beach Conference Center in Stanwood, Thursday August 8th.  There are two speakers speaking on dementia and marijuana. The drive to Stanwood is beautiful and I am looking forward to seeing you. The Annual Fall Conference will be held at a new location, the Embassy Suites in Lynnwood. The topics are legislative updates and advances in cardiac health.

WMCMA Gives Back, our Annual Holiday Party and local charity benefit will be held at the Museum of Flight again this year in December.  Please mark your calendars with these events and our monthly meetings for September and November.

As I close, I want to thank everyone who supports our organization. WMCMA is a leading case management organization that promotes the case management profession.
Have a great summer and I'll see you in August.

Sincerely,
Kathy Parry, BSN, RN, CCM
WMCMA Board President 2018-2019

Our Speakers:
"Analgesic Potential of Cannabis and Cannabinoids" 1.5 CE
Rebecca M. Craft, Ph.D.
Herbert L. Eastlick Professor of Psychology Director, Experimental Psychology Doctoral Program Washington State University

Learning Objectives: Describe the quantity, quality and limitations of clinical trials and animal studies testing the efficacy of cannabis and cannabinoids in the treatment of pain. Describe the most common side-effects observed with medicinal use of cannabis and cannabinoids. Describe the known mechanisms of action of the major phytocannabinoids (THC and CBD). Describe caveats and unknowns in regard to patient use of cannabis and cannabinoids (e.g., drug interactions, use in the elderly, quality control of products).

"Navigating Difficult Conversations: The Magic of Listening and Language"  1.5 CE
Don Desonier, JD (Ret), CSA

Learning Objectives: Understanding there can be a "power dichotomy", real or perceived, between the professional care staff in an elder care residential community, and the caregiver(s) and families of a loved one who is residing there - and learning how to bridge that gap so as to create a safe communication container. Learning how empathic listening, combined with the words they use in dialogue, are key tools professional staff can employ to diffuse stress, anger, anxiety and fear in their interaction with families. The Art of the Pause: Appreciating how emotional triggers can sabotage effective and authentic communication between caregivers, families and care staff.
