Meet Josh Morrow
Josh is one of our newest programmers, host of Josh's Big Gay Radio Show. You don't have to wait until June. You can celebrate Pride all year long!
Q. It has been a while since WMNF had a show dedicated to LGBTQIA issues. What are the biggest changes you’ve observed in media since then when it comes to these issues?
A: The biggest change I saw was when Viacom (parent company of MTV) launched LOGO back in 2005. Now it is very common to see a gay couple in television ads, internet ads, and even TV shows. A lot of local radio stations have a station on their HD channels dedicated to the gay community.
Q. How do you see your show broadening WMNF’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?
A: The LGBTQ community is very diverse, you have men, women, trans, people of color, old, young, etc. I program the music to include a little bit of everyone. The music has to have somewhat of a positive message somewhere. I also play music from fabulous drag queens who don’t get airplay. I also have the gay news where we highlight what’s going on in the country and our local Tampa Bay Area.
Q. You started broadcasting when you were 13. What was your show? Do you still have tapes?
A: I filled in on a local AM gospel station, how ironic, I hosted a Saturday and Sunday gospel music show after I would finish operating the controls for the preachers. I was in college at the age of 17 for broadcasting. Our college station was an NPR station WNCW. Unfortunately, I don’t have the tapes anymore, I wish I did.
Q. Who are your favorite old school and new LGBTQIA musical artists?
A: my favorite old school would be Elton John, RuPaul, or Queen. Today. We are blessed to have fantastic music from other drag queens. One of my favorite drag queen artists would be Adore Delano. Adores song “Adore You” is fantastic!
Q. What important questions or topics haven’t I asked you about that are critical for the WMNF audience to know?
A: Local LGBTQ-friendly artists are always encouraged to submit their music. I enjoy having local talent more than national talent. As of right now, I have two local queer artists whom we play. Coming out can be very hard for some people, so I bring you real-life coming out stories. I always need more feel free to send your coming-out story (audio form please) to josh@wmnf.org. The biggest thing to remember is PRIDE isn’t only one month out of the year our attraction to the same sex just doesn’t go away after a month. Celebrate all year long and show the world who you are!
Q. Is there anything else you would like to add?
A: A little about me! I have been married to my husband for six years and we’ve been together for 9 going on 10 years. Here’s a fun fact we both have the same first and last name, yes Josh Morrow squared! We have five cats and two dogs, yes it’s a zoo! I always love to hear from my listeners and I am looking for a female co-host who is a member of the LGBTQ community.
Lastly, one thing I want everyone to remember is a saying from Key West, Florida, we are all “ONE HUMAN FAMILY”! Love each other!
