More than Just Music... Musical Memories

Kurt Anderson in WMNR's Production studio, which houses decades of recorded programs

The classical - and classic - music that WMNR Fine Arts Radio plays is so important to many people. There can even be specific memories from decades ago that are unforgettable. I remember in high school putting Beethoven’s 7th Symphony on the portable turntable in my room and being entranced. When the side was over, I placed the needle again at the beginning of the LP to hear it again.

When I browse WMNR’s music library of over 20,000 CDs, I think of more than just Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. There are CDs with great musicians of the past that I have seen like Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Issac Stern, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jean Pierre Rampal, and Rudolf Serkin. I am also reminded of some of our broadcasters whose personal CDs were added after their passing, including Jeane Eddy, Nat Fields, Delphine Marcus, Mario Mesi, and Ellen Parrella.

Whatever your musical memories are, WMNR is fortunate to have strong listener support since 1982 that allows us to continue to be a source of great non-commercial classical -and classic - music.

Thank you!

WMNR’s broadcasters use a variety of sources to create their programs. Many use CDs from personal collections and our library, but a growing number play music from their laptops. One or two broadcasters still play an occasional LP or cassette.

The Recording Industry Association just released information on recorded music in 2024. Continuing the trend of the last few years, vinyl albums outsold CDs. However, LPs and CDs amount to only 11% of recorded revenue. Digital streaming brings in 84% of recording revenue.

Radio stations and satellite radio and the royalties they pay (including WMNR) brought in less than 5% of recording revenue in 2024. WMNR is a very small part of the royalty revenue, but to our listeners we are priceless and that can't be captured in a revenue report!
