Message from Principal Gavron
Dear families,

Today I write to you with bittersweet news. Our outstanding school nurse of many years, Marcia Nims CCH, RN, BSN, BA will be leaving Wayland Middle School to grow her integrative healthcare practice, which has been a dream of Marcia's for many years. Marcia's last day at school will be this Wednesday, November 7th.

In the weeks ahead we will have Laurie Hojlo RN, covering the health room. As a longtime reliable substitute nurse throughout the district, Laurie knows our school quite well. Laurie will serve as our point person until we obtain a permanent school nurse replacement.

We remain committed to ensuring your child's health and wellness throughout this transition. You may contact Laurie in the health room at 508-358-3809 or  [email protected] .  If you should have additional questions or concerns during this transition, please feel free to contact me or our School Nurse Leader/Public Health Nurse, Ruth Mori MSN, RN at 508-358-3617 or  [email protected]  .

We wish Marcia great success as she embarks on this new chapter in her healthcare career, knowing that we will miss her dearly. Please don't hesitate to drop Marcia a note to extend your thoughts and appreciation to Marcia over the next three days (though Marcia prefers that you not approach her in person about her departure if students are present).

On a separate wholly sweet note congratulations to director Kelly Lopez and the cast and crew of  The Rememberer . The incredibly moving WMS play was expertly executed, telling an important story to our school community. Thank you to all who worked on this incredible production.

Respectfully,
Betsy Gavron

Gift Your Child: LAST CALL!

We set a realistic goal of 300 donations (that’s under half the students at WMS) and we are 83% there. We are extending donation collections by one week so that we can meet our target -- get your donations in now! Our grant process kicks off shortly and we don’t want to say “No!” to a single staff member!
Just some friendly competition….6th is pulling ahead with 8th grade not far behind. 7th grade is catching up each week. Who will lead the pack?
WMS PTO Donations in Action: Look at What We Can Deliver Together!

When the parent community joins together, we can do so much to enrich our children’s experience at WMS. Last year, the WMS PTO put $20,000 back into the middle school. We funded classroom materials, cultural enrichment, inclusive classrooms, student clubs and grade level activities for our children. We brought you expert speakers on parenting topics and we showed our appreciation to our staff at WMS. Check out our Donations in Action poster:

However, we turned down $23,000 in grant requests from our staff because we did not have sufficient donations to Gift Your Child. We c ould not fulfill requests for exercise equipment, Mentor Program for METCO participants, robotics toolkits, replica artifacts, Social Thinking Posters and instructional guides, a master class with professional band musicians and instrumental folders for Orchestra Club.
Your donations to Gift Your Child go directly back to your children, enriching their experience at the middle school. Whether you give the suggested $100 per student gift, more or less, our aspirational goal is to have 100% participation in this fundraiser.  Donate Today ! LAST CALL !
Staff Appreciation: Relaxation Station
November 5 - 16
As a treat for our wonderful staff at the middle school, the WMS PTO has organized a chair massage relaxation lounge for them. They work hard every day for our children, so let’s give them a moment to catch their breath and relax!

While every day is the perfect day to thank our staff, please make a special point of it over the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for your hard work, passion and dedication, WMS Staff!

C O L O R C Y C L E - TURN MARKERS INTO ENERGY
Dear Families,

I’m excited to tell you about a very special program I’m coordinating at our school in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing new program devised to turn used markers into energy!

All around Wayland Middle School students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!

Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers or highlighters you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located around the school for your child to deposit the markers.

Thank you in advance for participating! With your help the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. Remember, don’t throw out that used marker - ColorCycle it!

Sincerely,
Pam Riddle, Wellness Teacher
6th Grade Math Night
Thursday, November 8
Session 1: 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Session 2: 6:30 - 8:00 PM

We hope to see you Thursday, November 8 for Math Night. Sixth-grade students brought home invitations last week; please be sure to RSVP to your child's math teacher as soon as possible. The night will begin in the cafeteria with an assortment of math games (including 24, 99, Cribbage and Number War card games). Students and their parents will then participate in a scavenger hunt consisting of math problems and clues. The winners of the scavenger hunt will receive a prize.  The sessions will conclude with an ice-cream sundae party provided through the generosity of the PTO. Please bring a pencil or two! Hope to see you there!
Private School Application Process
While we hope you are enjoying your experiences with Wayland Public Schools, we also know that some families will choose to apply to private schools as an alternative educational option. Please be sure to carefully follow the process outlined HERE to ensure a timely, quality processing of your child’s application to private school.
