Whitnall Middle School Family Newsletter
December 17, 2021

Hello WMS Families,

In the weeks leading up to the holiday break, we've enjoyed the return of our December concerts and a big congratulations to our orchestra and band students. To help put us in the holiday spirit, our Student Council sponsored a door decorating contest and the students have really been showing off their creativity. Also, thanks to our WMS Student Council, we have a couple dress up days planned next week.
  • Monday 12/20 - Pajama Day
  • Tuesday 12/21 - Holiday Color War
  • Wednesday 12/22 - Ugly sweater day. Holiday hats (Santa hats, elf hats, etc.) and holiday headbands (reindeer antlers, etc.) are also encouraged.

Wishing everyone a great start to the holiday season!

Social Media Safety
Digital media plays a major role in the lives of nearly all children and teens. The pace that technology advances can be overwhelming to keep up with. While children and teens move seamlessly between virtual and real worlds, they are often better prepared to handle unexpected situations in the real world then they are in the virtual world.

It is important that parents and guardians are engaged in their children's online activities to help guide them and prepare them to make responsible decisions online. Keeping an open dialogue with children and having honest discussions about what children encounter or may encounter online will be important as children learn to navigate their online world.

MAPS UPDATE
The fall MAP scores for the Whitnall Middle School will be sent home with your child this Friday (12/17). The report includes both reading and math scores. Please take a moment to review these with your child and initiate discussion about their growth or areas of opportunity for improvement. Please note, printed reports show "Winter 2022 Family Report" in the top left corner, however the correct testing window information (Fall 2021) is in the actual report.

The MAP report you are receiving is the Fall MAP assessment, which was administered to most students mid to late October. Extended absences for some of our students due to safety protocols resulted in delays in completing and communicating the MAP assessment.

Students will engage in the second round of MAP testing in late January and we anticipate a more timely turnaround for sharing your child’s MAP results with you.
