Whitnall Middle School Message
August 20, 2020

Hello WMS Families,

We are getting close to the start of the school year and we are so excited to welcome our students back! The 2020-21 school year promises to be a memorable one. For the past two years, the WMS has held a transition day for the 6th graders. This year, we are transitioning all students back on the week of September 1st through 4th (more details below in Return to School Dates). Our district is not hosting back to school nights that were previously scheduled for next week, however please note the dates for pictures.

Schedules will be available by next week Friday, August 28th. The deadline for parents requesting a change to their instructional delivery choice ended today. We now need time to process those requests and create sections/classes accordingly.  Upon viewing the schedule, please know that we can help fix most questions quickly. Our WMS Counselor Mr. Jim Gableman will be able to help any adjustments. His contact can be found at the bottom of the newsletter.

We appreciate your patience as we do our best to answer your questions about the school reopening. There are some documents in the Back to School Information section below that will be helpful. This information, as well as any updates we make, can be found on our website and in the Connect.

Ryan and I are looking forward to seeing all the students and families again soon. We hope that your family can enjoy the remaining summer days and nights before school resumes. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Chris D'Acquisto Ryan Relich
Principal WMS Assistant Principal WMS

Back to School Information
This year will look a bit different for our returning families. Please refer to the following documents for information and FAQ:
Questions pertaining to special education FAQ here
If after reviewing this information you still have specific questions about reopening, you can email REOPEN2020@WHITNALL.COM.
BACKPACKS: New for the 2020-21 school year, we are encouraging students to take backpacks to class with all the necessary learning materials they will need throughout the day in an effort to reduce trips to their locker and eliminate hallway congestion. Students will still be assigned a locker and locks will be distributed the first day of school.

Student Schedules
Families are finalizing their decisions for students instructional delivery through the end of this week. We will begin working on completing student schedules once the survey is closed. We appreciate your patience during these ever-changing times. Families will be notified as soon as student schedules become available for viewing
Technology
Chromebooks will be distributed during the first week of school. If your student retained their technology over the summer please be sure they bring their charged Chromebook to school.
WMS Sports
WMS offers three opportunities for sports in the fall including Cross Country, Girls Basketball, and Dance. Currently, our athletic director is gathering sports specific details regarding availability and our district will be sharing more information about WMS sports in the Connect next week.
Grading Update
Grading Scale CHANGE for WMS fall of 2020:
Beginning in the fall of 2020, WMS will use a grading scale similar to the scale used at Whitnall High School. Rather than using the terms No Evidence (N), Beginning (B), Developing (D), Proficient (P) or Exceeding (E), WMS will now use a scale that builds from F through A. Please reference this document to view the grading rubric.

Books Needed
If you have textbooks or other books from Whitnall Middle School, please return these when you get your photo taken on 8/25 or 8/31. Make sure to put the books in a bag clearly marked with your name.
You can also bring them to the middle school lobby. We will have a cart in the foyer to collect any books you may been using over the break.
School Supply Kits
Families that pre-ordered school supply kits online may pick them up in the WMS main office Monday through Friday from 8 AM - 3 PM. Park and ring the bell at the main office entrance and we will bring the supply kit to you. Supply kits that are not picked up prior to school will be delivered to your child’s classroom. Should you have any questions, please contact Dawn Jones (414-525-8660 or dmjones@whitnall.com)
