WMS Centennial Scholarship for WWAMI Medical Education

The Wyoming Medical Society celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2003. In recognition of that centennial anniversary, Newcastle physician and WMS past president, Dr. Michael Jording, founded the Wyoming Centennial Scholarship Fund.

Since the first award was presented in 2007 to now practicing physician and WMS Board Member Luke Goddard, MD, the award has awarded more than $75,000 to 56 graduating and first-year WWAMI students.

This year, WMS is honored to present Dr. Madeleine Isler the Outstanding Graduate Award.

'

Dr. Isler is headed to the University of Vermont to complete her dermatology training after finishing an intern year in the Spokane area.

Congratulations to all of our distinguished WWAMI graduates, and a very special congratulations to this year's Outstanding Graduate Dr. Isler.

The Joint Labor, Health & Social Services Committee (JLHSS) turns to WMS and its members for help. Please take a moment to complete this important survey.

WMS will be working with legislators this year to tackle issues such as physician workforce and patient access to care. We've been asked to provide physician workforce data and need your help.

We will be presenting the results of this survey to the legislature in late June. So far, we have 29 responses from just 11 of our 23 counties. Please take a few moments to complete the survey and encourage your colleague to do the same. This data will be used to inform policy decisions that will directly impact you, your practice and your patients.

FTC: Changes Rules Around Non-Compete Clauses

Tuesday, June 18, 2024 - noon

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently finalized and voted 3 to 2 to approve its much-anticipated rule banning non-compete agreements between employers and employees. Although early versions of the rule had largely excepted hospitals, the final rule does not, and the FTC has noted that physician non-competes are a specific target of this rule. However, how the rule applies to non-profits and local government entities, both of which have a large presence in healthcare in Wyoming and which the FTC doesn’t have jurisdiction over, is murky.

In addition, industry groups have already sued the FTC (in Texas and Pennsylvania) to void the rule, but it remains to be seen whether those efforts will yield results before it goes into effect. Join the Wyoming Hospital Association, the Wyoming Medical Society, and lawyers from Husch Blackwell, LLP’s healthcare regulatory, labor and employment, and competition groups to hear about how the FTC’s rule may apply to Wyoming hospitals and physicians, and how best to prepare for complying with the rule.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) just announced a webinar on the noncompete rule - May 31, 2024, at 1:00 PM ET.

The FTC will host an online overview of the final rule banning noncompetes, focused on healthcare. Chair Lina Khan will kick off the session before turning it over to the Office of Policy Planning.

The briefing will include a summary of the rule with a focus on healthcare and time for answering questions submitted in advance using the email address provided below.

The briefing is free and expected to last 30 minutes. The FTC invites you to submit questions in advance by email at asknoncompete@ftc.gov. In the subject line, please include “Healthcare Briefing”.

If you are interested in attending, please register here.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Resources, guides, and multi-language model notices are available on the Noncompete Rule page at www.ftc.gov/noncompetes.

HEALTHCARE UPDATES

People Matter, Words Matter

The American Hospital Association has launched a campaign to combat stigma to help individuals feel seen & heard.

Words can transmit stigma. Studies have shown that people with psychiatric and/or substance use disorders often feel judged, outside and inside the health care system. This can lead them to avoid, delay or stop seeking treatment. The way we talk about people with a behavioral disorder can change lives – in either a positive or negative manner.

The AHA, together with behavioral health and language experts from member hospitals and partner organizations, will release a series of downloadable posters to help your employees adopt patient-centered, respectful language.

People matter and the words we use to describe them or the disorders they have matter.
