WMS on Prior Authorization
WMS continues to work in partnership with the Wyoming Hospital Association (WHA) to try to reform prior authorization practices in the state. Our members continue to share stories of the time-wasting, care-delaying payer practice of prior authorization and the need for states to rightsize the practice.

WMS and WHA met this past week in Casper with representatives from several of Wyoming's largest insurance players and legislators tasked with chairing a subgroup on this topic.

Key tenets we're championing include:
  • Establish quick response times
  • Allow adverse determinations only by a clinical peer with experience in the same specialty that typically manages the patient's condition
  • Prohibit retroactive denials if care is preauthorized
  • Make authorization valid for at least one year, regardless of dose changes
  • Require transparency and public release of insurers' prior authorization data by drug and service as it relates to approvals, denials, appeals, wait times and more
  • Require a new health plan to honor the patient's prior authorization for at least 90 days
  • Reduce volume through the use of solutions such as prior authorization exemptions or gold-carding programs.

If you would like to be involved in the issue or help WMS with testimony through the interim and coming session, please call, text or email Sheila Bush at 307-630-8602 or sheila@wyomed.org

Alert: MATE Training Requirement
Important MATE Training Update:

On December 29, 2022, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a new one-time requirement which goes into effect as of June, 27, 2023 for any Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioner (except for veterinarians) to complete eight hours of training “on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.”

The requirement goes into effect on June 27, 2023, so:
  • IF your DEA renewal date is between now and June 26, 2023: you will not need to complete the training until you renew your license the next time
  • If your DEA renewal date is after June 27, 2023, or later: you will need to complete the training requirement before your next renewal
