PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

WMS To Launch Statewide Patient Initiative

WMS Members,

A large portion of the work that we do is political advocacy, though, as we’ve tried to highlight recently, our society does so much more. In the past five years, it has felt like medicine, and doctors in particular, have been attacked, demonized, and degraded. At times we even act this way toward each other. Whether perception or reality, we tend to become defensive, and I believe this takes away from our true purpose, simply caring for patients. It feels like our work as a profession, and here at the society, has become a job more than a profession, with a misguided focus. True to Dr. Gawande’s assessment in his novel Better, I believe we can be - better.

To this end, in the words of the great Wendy Sampson, I would like to submit for your consideration, a new endeavor for our society to put forth our focus. I believe we need a state-wide effort, focusing on patient needs, that we can all get behind, regardless of specialty. I want this work to be done by our members across the state. If we can shift our focus and regain our purpose, I believe all else will fall into place. This vision is in its infancy, so I would request that members interested in getting involved whether through brainstorming project ideas or serving on a workgroup, please contact info@wyomed.org, so we can begin work developing our plan.

Sincerely,

Kris Schamber, MD

WMS President

Nirsevimab Shortage Requires Prioritization

Limited Availability of Nirsevimab

Limited availability of Nirsevimab in the U.S. has prompted the CDC to publish interim CDC recommendations to protect infants from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) during the 2023-2024 Respiratory Virus Season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is issuing this Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory to provide options for clinicians to protect infants from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the context of a limited supply of nirsevimab, a long-acting monoclonal antibody immunization product recommended for preventing RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease in infants. Read more.

FEDERAL AMA UPDATES

2024 Physician Payment Schedule (MFS) Final Rule

The AMA continues to ask physicians to join them in the continuing fight for physician reimbursement and payment. On November 2, CMS released the 2024 Revisions to Payment Policies under the Medicare Physician Payment Schedule (MFS) and Other Changes to Party B Payment and Coverage Policies final rule.

WMS has joined other state medical and specialties societies with the AMA in a letter to Congress urging them to quickly pass legislation to stop another impending round of Medicare payment cuts. Absent Congressional intervention, physicians are facing a 3.37 percent payment reduction on January 1, 2024.
