Banquet - Wednesday May 1st
Begins right after school and end by 3:30 p.m.
WMS Cafeteria

On Wednesday, May 1st, 2019, Wayland Middle School will be hosting its 46th Annual Latin Banquet, the Middle School’s longest running tradition, for which our cafeteria is reconstructed into ancient Rome. Our Latin scholars get a chance to live what they have been learning by dressing, acting and feasting like a Roman. They will present skits; play in the Banquet Band (known as the Musici Apollonis ) participate in the Triumphal march; compete in the Costume Contest; and dine as the Romans did “ ab ovo ad mala .” Lastly, a ceremony honoring 8th grade Operatives for their achievement on the National Latin Exam 2019 will conclude the festivities.

Our students have done extremely well on the NLE this year with two perfect scorers, Riley Reynolds and Elena Liu! Thirteen more achieved a “summa cum laude” receiving a gold medal with scores of 36/40 or above: Eli Sodickson, Eleanor Markey, Ethan Brandaleone, Maya Lee, Megan O’Donnell, Madison Schofield, Bryn Leonard, Erica O’Donnell, Gina Wang, Noelle Whitmore, Alexei Rjanikov, Justin Mao, and Matthew Frank. Furthermore, four students are the recipients of “maxima cum laude” silver medals: Carson Whitehouse, Henry Blackburn, Andrew Hiebert, and Wesley Tse. As the middle school approach in teaching Latin is now proficiency-based, the success on this exam provides evidence that students are still able to succeed on a standardized, multiple-choice, performance-based test associated with a more traditional method of teaching and learning.
MCAS Testing
(See dates above in "Mark Your Calendar" section.)

We ask that you send your student to school well rested, with a charged Chromebook, a water bottle and a healthy snack each day of testing. If at all possible, we ask you to avoid scheduling appointments for your child these testing dates. Many thanks!

Your Middle School Kid's Gonna Be Okay: How Parents Can Facilitate Their Child's Executive Function Development
Michael Delman, CEO of Beyond BookSmart
Thursday, May 16, 9:00 am

Children, being so vulnerable to the opinions of others and not yet having developed long-term thinking, must learn how to make good decisions and develop the motivation and skills to stay focused on those things that truly matter to them in a world filled with distractions. The good news is that parents can teach these skills. Join author Michael Delman, a lifelong educator and Executive Function expert, as he shares tips and tools that parents can use with their middle school children.

Please send us in advance any topics you would like to see covered and/or questions for Michael Delman to answer during his time with us. Comments can be directed to [email protected] .

Student Placement Requests for 2019-2020 School Year
Deadline: WEDNESDAY, MAY 1ST

Considerable thought and effort are given to student scheduling here at WMS. It is a highly complex, intricate, and time-consuming process. Parents may make specific placement requests only under the following circumstances:

  • If you have concerns about a teacher based on an older sibling's experience, you may request a different teacher for your child. You may not, however, request a specific teacher.
  • If your child has had difficulty with a specific student which has negatively impacted your child's ability to learn, you may request that the children be placed in separate clusters.
  • Please know that we cannot consider requests from parents to place students together.

Requests must be sent via email to  [email protected]  no later than  Wednesday, May 1st . Please include your child's first and last name, and grade they will be in as of September 2019. Although we will work hard to honor your request, we cannot make any guarantees.
