SCHOOL PICTURE DAY



School pictures are coming! On October 13th or 14th students will take their pictures during PE class. This year pictures can only be ordered online. Save time and order now. The window will close a few days after picture day to send the orders to the lab, but it will re-open again if the link below tells you that ordering is closed. You will have to keep trying for a few days. Use this link to pre-order your pictures:

WMS PTA Meeting

Mark your calendars for the second Tuesday of the month so you can join the first PTA meeting of the year! It will be at 7pm. Our October PTA Meeting will have special guest Ms. Jennifer Sexton, WMS Substance Abuse Counselor. 


Volunteers Needed

While we're talking about the PTA.....we have volunteer positions available. Most are a short commitment (unlike this here newsletter so if you'd like to help with that too, I won't turn you down.)

 

HIGH NEED - ACTL Rep - This committee meets monthly at Syphax Center from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (IN PERSON). Secondary schools are allowed two representatives. Job Duties - attend meetings and report out to monthly PTA membership meetings.


Back to School Teacher Breakfast - Needed for August 2023 - Solicit volunteers, donations, and purchases for back to school teacher breakfast. Drop items off at school and set up breakfast.


PALS Day Coordinator - Needed for August 2023 - Solicit volunteers, donations, and purchases of doughnuts and water for PALS Day. Drop off items at school and man the doughnut table with additional volunteers. 


Schools Supplies Coordinator - Late Spring 2023/Late Summer 2023 - Work with vendor to order supplies, once delivered, solicit volunteers to open boxes, and deliver to correct classrooms before PALS day in August. 


PTA Reflections Art Contest Chair - August/September/October 2023 - Solicit artwork from students, collect from school, find judges, award students, deliver artwork to county contest. This is a concentrated effort in August to announce the contest and find judges before the county contest due date. 


New School year, (re)New PTA Membership and Pay Activity Fees for 2022-2023

Did you forget to sign up or renew membership for the WMS PTA this year? Well there is still time. Every year you need to renew your membership AND pay activity fees. These fees help cover the fall fest and end of the year activities since we don't do fundraisers. 8th grade families….we missed out on 5th grade graduation and your activity fee goes towards their 8th grade graduation so please be sure to pay the activity fee!

Update Your Information in ParentVue

Since the start of the school year, approximately 46 percent of families have completed the AOVP—thank you! AOVP is the opportunity for families to review and update student, parent and emergency contact information. It also contains important policies and information. All families must complete this process by Oct. 31, 2022. Support is available in a variety of ways: Families can access the AOVP through their ParentVUE account online or on the app

Contact your child’s school for assistance activating your ParentVUE account, completing AOVP, or for additional support.

Video tutorials and ParentVUE activation instructions 

NEW: Receive in-person support in multiple languages by attending one of two evening Pizza and ParentVUE events, October 19 and 26, to help families complete AOVP. View the event flyer.


APS Earns A+ and Top Rankings in 2023 Best Schools Report

The 2023 Best Schools Report by Niche is out, and APS again ranked #1 Best Place to Teach and #2 Best Public School Division in Virginia. Niche publishes the report annually and specializes in K-12 school analysis and ranking. Arlington earned an A+ overall and high marks for schools, teachers, academics, health and safety, diversity and other categories. Niche also rated APS #9 among 132 Virginia school divisions for having the best teachers. Read the full Report Card and learn more


Student Progress Data Available

APS maintains the Student Progress Dashboard and Equity Profile to monitor and assess student achievement and identify gaps. Both have been updated with 2021-22 year-end assessment results:

-The Student Progress Dashboard now includes end-of-year data for DIBELS, Math Inventory (MI) and Reading Inventory (RI). 

-The Equity Profile Dashboard now includes the 2021-22 Standards of Learning (SOLs) test results for Grades 3 and 8.

Academic Help Online at No Cost!

NEW Academic Support for Middle and High School Students: the new academic support available for secondary students called PAPER. PAPER provides 24/7 on-demand virtual tutors available to students for assistance with homework, essay review and other academic support in multiple subjects and languages. Teachers have been promoting this service directly to students. Details online. It is a great resource!


Free COVID Testing Resumes

COVID Testing Continues—Opt In Now: Our in-school weekly COVID testing program is available to all students. This testing helps with early detection of positive COVID cases at school, and is available to returning and new students whose parents/guardians either reaffirm their initial consent or complete a new consent form online. Complete information and opt in forms are onlineView the updated COVID-19 Protocols and FAQ online.


APS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from Sept. 15-Oct. 15. This year’s theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation” as we celebrate Latino Americans who have enriched our community. This year’s celebration includes an Oct. 13 School Board recognition of school-based Latino leaders and high school students selected for their extraordinary achievements.


September is Suicide Prevention Month

APS has a variety of resources available to support student mental health and wellbeing, as well as to help those who may be experiencing emotional distress or crisis. Our SOS Suicide Prevention program teaches students how to respond when someone around them says or does something that could be seen as a desire to hurt themselves. If you or someone you know is in crisis, you can call or text 988. Learn more about how APS responds to support students, as well as mental health resources available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Arlington Your Voice Matters Results Available

The results for the 2022 Your Voice Matters Survey are available online. The survey’s topics included include school and community climate, health and well-being and engagement. In total, more than 19,000 survey responses were collected from students, staff, and families. The results will be used to inform work across both APS and the Arlington County Government. 

Community News

Arlington's big fall cleanup and drop-off day takes place Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Wakefield High School’s parking lot at 1325 South Dinwiddie Street. Arlington residents can safely dispose of household hazardous materials and old electronics during the event.


Share your input on temporary outdoor seating areas and general outdoor dining to inform Arlington’s rules and regulations as part of the Future of Outdoor Dining (FOOD) Study through October 21.


WalkArlington launched registration for the Fall 2022 8-Week Walking Challenge. Register for this free program to receive weekly emails with inspiration to walk daily.


Arlington Public Libraries are hosting tons of events this month. They have many family friendly Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations including dancing, games, and story times. You can view them and RSVP here.


Arlington County Parks and Recreation's house basketball registration extended through this week.Register here.


Provide your feedback on the Draft Forestry and Natural Resources Plan through October 3 (formulario en español). Arlington’s Forestry and Natural Resources Plan is designed to address environmental challenges and ensure Arlington’s natural resources for current and future generations.
