Classroom News - Total Eclipse Adventures

On Monday, we came together as a school community to witness a rare celestial event - the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. As families gathered on the patio to observe this extraordinary phenomenon, it was evident that both children and adults were equally captivated by the celestial display.

Seizing this unique opportunity, our dedicated teachers integrated astronomy lessons into their classes, perfectly complementing the Montessori cultural curriculum, which emphasizes interconnectedness and the exploration of the world around us. Read on for a sampling of the many educational opportunities the eclipse brought to our Primary, Elementary and Middle School students.

Primary (3-6) Program

Primary students in Room 19 discussed the solar eclipse during Morning Meeting, exploring the orbits of the sun and moon and drawing connections to the Montessori Birth & Life celebration. Later, they took part in a hands-on activity by selecting balls from the gym and reenacting a solar eclipse on the soccer field. Equipped with a deeper understanding of the celestial event, many students chose to observe the eclipse with their families after school.

Lower Elementary (6-9) Program

Like the Primary students, the students in the 6-9 Program delved into the excitement of the solar eclipse using hands-on activities. They got creative, using a light and foam ball to simulate the eclipse and learned about the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies. On the day of the eclipse, students and parents gathered in the Great Room for an afternoon of eclipse-themed fun. From crafting eclipse models to creating chalk drawings, there was no shortage of engaging activities. And of course, everyone eagerly took turns stepping outside to catch a glimpse of the eclipse as it unfolded before their eyes.

Upper Elementary (9-12) & Middle School Programs

In the lead-up to the eclipse, students in the 9-12 and Middle School programs immersed themselves in learning about this rare event and its impact on the world. On the day of the eclipse, they took their curiosity a step further by contributing to NASA's research efforts. Using the GLOBE Observer app, they measured air temperature, monitored cloud coverage and characterized vegetation in the area. They also experimented with photography to capture the eclipse's historic moments for posterity.
