Fostering Authentic Montessori Environments Through Accreditation
Dear Families,
Achieving American Montessori Society (AMS) accreditation is a mark of excellence that signifies a school’s commitment to Dr. Maria Montessori’s original vision for education. Accreditation ensures that the learning environment, educators and methodologies align with the principles she established, fostering a setting where students can succeed, develop a strong sense of identity, and acquire essential skills to navigate and contribute meaningfully to the world. The process of accreditation is rigorous, requiring schools to meet strict criteria that go beyond the use of Montessori materials to enhance learning. An authentic Montessori experience is built upon a carefully curated social environment, including three-year age groupings that embody the mentor-apprentice model, as well as educators who dedicate themselves to continuous self-reflection and professional growth within an authentic Montessori framework.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an accredited Montessori school is the opportunity to be part of a larger network of like-minded institutions that remain steadfast in preserving Montessori’s educational philosophy. These schools are committed to ensuring that their environments remain untouched by external pressures that might dilute the integrity of Montessori education. This dedication provides students with a space where they can truly discover themselves, express their individuality and cultivate the independence needed to navigate the complexities of adult life. Regardless of the community in which a Montessori school is established, adherence to the AMS reaccreditation standards ensures that each institution remains a beacon of Dr. Montessori’s vision, fostering dynamic educational settings that inspire curiosity and teach students how to engage in self-directed learning.
A key element of maintaining and strengthening this network of accredited Montessori schools is the practice of peer support through on-site visits. These visits allow educators and administrators to observe and learn from one another, reinforcing best practices and upholding the highest standards of Montessori education. Our last on-site visit was in 2017 when Montessori experts from around the country visited to evaluate our programs. Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a visit as one of those experts, supporting another school that recently established an elementary program. Within moments of stepping into an authentic Montessori environment, it becomes clear how closely a school adheres to Montessori principles—the proof is in how children interact, question, explore, and advocate for themselves and their learning. Seeing other accredited Montessori schools thrive serves as both inspiration and affirmation, deepening my appreciation for what we have at WMS. It is a truly special place that has inspired many over the years and continues to honor Dr. Montessori’s vision every single day.
