Teamwork Takes Center Stage
Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., we will have the opportunity to enjoy "The Cuckoo" performed by the Lower Elementary (6-9) students. Each year, students throughout WMS have opportunities to share their learning with our community, and musical performances are one of those moments. Families, students at other program levels, staff and sometimes even alumni attend the performances. The amount of effort students put into these shows is so much more than we’ll notice as audience members. They learn to collaborate, allow others to be in the spotlight, share the stage and boost each other to give everyone a chance to have their moment to shine.
Years ago, my daughter, who is not at all interested in team sports, defined theater and singing as her "sport." She explained that all of the things schools say happen when you participate in sports are part of being in a production together. Teamwork, moving out of the way for another person to "score" or be in the spotlight, and helping those who are nervous about how they may look, sound or perform during a game (or performance, in her case) are among the skills learned. It takes the entire team - on the stage, running the lights, sound, stage crew, costume designers - to put on a show. Some are in front of the stage and others are rarely, if ever, seen.
School is about academics and so much more. It is about learning about others, sharing our knowledge and experience (whether child or adult), supporting learning and growth of each other, and appreciating the results of those efforts. As the show gets closer, the excitement builds. We look forward to enjoying tomorrow’s show and the others throughout the year. We hope you’ll join us!
